Colours and what they mean in films by Rebecca Comper

Red We normally associate the colour red with danger, as it is normally used for danger signs as it is a colour that stands out. We also associate it with danger because it is the colour of fire and blood, and is also used a lot for celebrations and traditions like halloween which meaning it is also seen to be a colour that represents horror.

yellow Yellow is a colour we associate with happiness as it is the colour of sunshine and summer when it is warm and people tend to have more freedom and therefore be happier. It is also a colour associated with having a lot of money and being rich.

Pink Pink is seen to be quite a girl, sexy colour depending on the shade. For example if it is a baby pink colour it can be associated with a baby girls room. However if it d a dark colourist is more associated with older girls.

Green Green is the colour of nature therefore it is seen to be a colour to represent life and the outside It is a colour that can also represent relaxation. However, green is also associated sometimes with halloween or gruesome things.

Blue blue is also seen to be a colour representing relations as it is like looking up at a bright blue sky on a summers day. However a dark or dull shade of blue has connotations of sadness or loneliness.

Black The color black has many connotations. For example it symbolizes death, and evil. Because it is a dark color, it is particularly good for films with dark story lines and genres. It is also most commonly used to represent something scary and is used for Halloween costumes and Halloween films.

Conclusion Looking at the connotations of colours and what they can represent has helped me think of the mood i want to create with the film me and Maddie are making and what colours would be best to fit the specific mood. Learning what different colours can mean and represent has helped me to understand how i can use colours to my advantage to create the specific and distinct mood and tone set for the film.
