Welcome I’m Donta and this is Annie. We’re going to show you how to use Desferal

I’m “Mister Desferal” Mr. Desferal was developed by Ms. Susan Kurth, PNP, Children’s Hospital, Boston

Getting Ready We always start by washing our hands with soap and water

Getting Ready Then, we dry our hands

Get out the equipment Put all of your supplies in a clean area

Find a spot Pick where on your body you will give your infusion

Apply EMLA If you want, put EMLA on your skin 30 minutes before you’re ready to start. This makes your skin numb so the needle won’t hurt too much.

Clean the skin Use alcohol and iodine swabs to clean the skin.

Prepare the pump

Clean your skin - unless you want a skin infection

And now, the part that looks really hard…

Place the needle There are different kinds of needles

Get your needle ready, and put it in.

Put on the dressing Secure and cover the needle with a dressing. Many people use clear Tegaderm.

Pack the pump Put the pump in its carrying case.

When your pump is packed in the bag, you can sleep or walk around with it

Keep track We use a calendar to keep track of when we use our Desferal. We try to use it at least 5 days a week.

Sometimes you get a skin reaction It usually goes away Scars may come if you use the same spot on the skin for many days in a row, or if you get a skin infection.

Port-A-Caths are sometimes used for transfusions. Some people also use the Port-A-Cath for Desferal
