Output Devices

Input Devices Last Lesson… An Input Device… “ Supplies the CPU with data” Why is it needed? “So the user can instruct the computer to do something – get data to the CPU for processing” Learning Objectives: a)Understand the need for output devices. b)Describe suitable output devices for a wide range of computer controlled situations. c)Discuss output devices for users with specific needs. What supplies the CPU with data? Input Devices Data In

Starter Question for WB What is an output device Why is it needed?

Output Devices So what is an output device? An Output Device… “ Receives the processed data from the CPU and presents it to the user as information Why is it needed? “So the user can access the processed data / information as a result of the CPU’s processing Learning Objectives: a)Understand the need for output devices. b)Describe suitable output devices for a wide range of computer controlled situations. c)Discuss output devices for users with specific needs. What supplies the user with information? Output Devices Information Out

Output Devices Learning Check What is an output device? Why are output devices needed? Learning Objectives: a)Understand the need for output devices. b)Describe suitable output devices for a wide range of computer controlled situations. c)Discuss output devices for users with specific needs.

Output Devices Task : What are the 5 human senses? What did we get? Learning Objectives: a)Understand the need for output devices. b)Describe suitable output devices for a wide range of computer controlled situations. c)Discuss output devices for users with specific needs.

Output Devices Learning Objectives: a)Understand the need for output devices. b)Describe suitable output devices for a wide range of computer controlled situations. c)Discuss output devices for users with specific needs. Output devices aim to present us with information in a range of different forms… So far, current output technology presents us with information that we can see, hear and feel. Sight HearingSmell Taste Touch ? ?

Output Devices “Mainstream” Output Devices Learning Objectives: a)Understand the need for output devices. b)Describe suitable output devices for a wide range of computer controlled situations. c)Discuss output devices for users with specific needs. Monitor / VDU: Display information via pixels on a screen. Pixels combine to present us with images that we can recognise and gain information from. Used in a wide range of areas (home / office). Usually accompanies a desktop computer. Projector: Projects an image on a screen/wall/object to present us with images that we can recognise and gain information from. Used in cinemas, schools, video conferencing etc. Speakers: They vibrate at varying frequencies to produce different sounds that we hear like speech or music. Used in various environments (home, office, cinema, school, gigs, etc.) Printer: Ink or Toner is used to place an image/text onto paper to provide the user with information. Used at home and in the office and many other settings. Injet printers place wet ink on the paper which dries whereas a laser printer uses static energy (generated by lasers) to attract toner into certain formations (text/images) which are then placed on the paper and heated so that they stick.

Output Devices “Specialist / Industry” - Output Devices Learning Objectives: a)Understand the need for output devices. b)Describe suitable output devices for a wide range of computer controlled situations. c)Discuss output devices for users with specific needs. Actuator: These are output devices which produce movement / motion. For example, they are used on a plane to control the ‘flaps’ on the wing. If the auto pilot senses a drop in altitude then the computer will send the processed data to these output devices to adjust the ‘flaps’ accordingly. Plotter: This is a specialist output device which prints huge images onto massive sheets of paper or other suitable materials. They are used to create technical drawings and blueprints. They are similar to printers but often will use a ‘pen’ to create the images as opposed to a ‘printer head’.

Output Devices Learning Check Can you name 3 “main- stream” output devices? Can you name a specialist / industry output device? Learning Objectives: a)Understand the need for output devices. b)Describe suitable output devices for a wide range of computer controlled situations. c)Discuss output devices for users with specific needs.

Hands up if you could confidently list some specialist output devices for users with disabilities

Output Devices “Users with Specific Needs” – Output Devices and Adaptions to Output Devices Learning Objectives: a)Understand the need for output devices. b)Describe suitable output devices for a wide range of computer controlled situations. c)Discuss output devices for users with specific needs. Screen Reader: Like the screen magnification software, this adapts the output device (screen) to present the text in a ‘spoken’ form. Screen Magnification: Although not technically an output device in itself (the screen is the output device), screen magnification software will adapt the screen so that partially sighted people can more easily read the information on the screen. Braille Printer: These work by punching dents into a sheet of paper to form the Braille that someone who is visually impaired can feel and interpret as information. Voice Synthesiser: These output devices (which is a speaker and screen combined) allow users (who cannot naturally communicate) to pick letters and words from a screen and the synthesiser will then synthesise human speech to speak the letters/words aloud. “Receives”

Hands up if NOW you could confidently list some specialist output devices for users with disabilities

Exam Question - WB State two output devices. For each device describe its function and an environment where it is commonly used. (6 marks)

Exam Question - WB State two output devices which are designed for users with specific needs. For each device explain how these devices meet those needs. (6 marks)

Exam Technique 1.Command words State / List – Usually one word answers (or set of words) Describe – Say WHAT it is Explain – Say WHAT it is and WHY it is like it is Discuss – Weigh up both sides (pros/cons, etc.) (with examples) – if a question asks for examples you must give them! 2.Marks available Need to plan your answer according to the marks available, for example: - a 4 mark ‘state’ question would require 4 terms. - a 4 mark ‘describe’ question would require 2 terms, both with their own description. Higher Order

Tasks 1.Create a mind map for ‘Input Devices’ – Grouping them into the following groups: Mainstream Specialist (for users with specific needs) 2.Create a mind map for ‘Output Devices’ – Grouping them into the following groups: Mainstream Specialist (for users with specific needs)
