ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS

OBJECTIVES IDENTIFY THE STEPS OF THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS. DETERMINE CRITERIA FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW TECHNOLOGY

The engineering design process is a recurring set of activities that helps an engineer to solve a problem or create a product.

ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS STEPS 1. Identify a need. 2. Design a solution. 3. Build a prototype. 4. Test the prototype. 5. Verify test results. 6. Implement and market solutions. EXAMPLE 1. 2. 3. 4 5. 6.

DESIGNING SOLUTIONS Technological designs are constrained by criteria relevant to the original purpose such as cost, time, trade-offs, availability of materials, aesthetics, and the potential impact on humans and the environment. Design prototypes are represented by drawings and simple models. The suitability of a prototype must be continually tested and evaluated in terms of its original purpose and to ensure that it complies with the original design constraints.

INTRODUCTION OF TECHNOLOGIES TO SOCIETY Decisions about the introduction of new technologies into society involve: Assessment of alternatives Risks Costs Benefits

BIAS Bias is prejudice in favor of or against a thing, person, or technology. Possible sources of bias associated with the investigator, procedure, or instrument can affect the collection of data and its interpretation. One safeguard against bias is for different investigators to conduct independent studies of the new technology.
