1 Checking Student Work In MS Word How to mark up papers digitally by using MS Word By Thomas Redd

2 Rationale  Stacks of Papers that need grading  Hard to read handwriting  Clear and complete feedback  Plenty of space available to write feedback  Environmentally friendly—save a tree  Wisely use the technology that we have available  Easily mark and grade quizzes, journals, essays—all written responses

3 Specifications  Create a way to collect students’ papers electronically  Email (attachments)  Drop Box  Thumb drives  LAN School (in the Lab)  Microsoft Word  Computers

4 Open MS Word

5 Open the Review Toolbar by clicking View

6 Now click Toolbars

7 Now click on Reviewing if it does not have a check mark in front of it. If it has a check mark, the toolbar is already installed.

8 Your computer should now have these tools somewhere at the top.

9 Know your Markup Tools  Make detail suggestions to students  Show changes you would make  Highlight problems such as spelling  Comments can be toggled on or off  Save comments and return to students

10 Markup Tools  Choose “Final Showing Markup” in this box to see the comments.  Comments can also be turned off by selecting “Final.”

11 Marking Students’ Work  You now are ready to mark students’ work

12 Collecting Documents  Documents can be emailed to you  They can be collected in the lab using LAN School  Have students save documents to a thumb drive  This method would be the easiest  I suggest that you have several thumb drives available to be used only to hand in work

13 Classroom Logistics  Have a thumb drive per row or table  Use a sticky label to identify the drive  Perhaps students’ names on the drives would help  Row number labels may be best  In your H drive, create a folder for students’ work with sub folders for drives  Do what works for you

14 Load a Document  Open a student document (from the thumb drive, email, or LAN School) School)

15 Select problem spots and click this button to highlight them.

16 Add comments by clicking this button.

17 Adding comments is easy.

19 Add notes that are clear to the students, and easily read.

20 Use this button to show changes you make to the document.

21 Deleted items and format changes are noted.

22 Know your Markup Tools  These buttons move your through your comments and changes step by step

23 Know your Markup Tools  This button lets the document owner accept all the changes you have made to their document.

24 Know your Markup Tools  This button lets the document owner accept all the changes you have made to their document.

25 Know your Markup Tools  This button lets removes the comment that you are currently on.

26 Know your Markup Tools  This button adds the comment to the highlighted selection in your document

27 Know your Markup Tools  This button highlights the selected text.

28 Know your Markup Tools  This button allows you to change the highlighter color.  You may wish to establish a standard color for different errors; yellow for spelling, pink for grammar, etc

29 Know your Markup Tools  This button shows additions to a document in red, and adds a comment telling what is deleted  Use this to show students the changes you propose for their document.

30 Know your Markup Tools  This button creates a double screen with the document in the top, and the comments in a lower document like footnotes.  The footnotes section can be printed by clicking on it and printing.

31 Returning the Document  Once you have read the document and added your comments, save the document and return it to the student

32 Student Corrections  Students can change their paper according to you comments and resubmit it if you wish  They turn off your comments using the first box of the menu bar
