2 Q. What does Machiavelli mean by Clemency?  He means lead with power and strength but do not be a dictator.  Lead with Authority and pride but not cruel and unreasonable. Clemency Answer to Question 28

3 What does reproach or cruelty even mean? Basically should a prince mind if people are talking about him being to unfair or unreasonable, don’t listen to them and lead how you choose.  As long as you show them mercy but not too much or else problems will arise or else you will get walked over.  You have to be able to ignore the reputation of cruelty and do it anyways. 4  A prince is forced to be viewed as powerful, strong, and someone who will take care of its people.  A prince should show fear but also not come off as too confident.  Machiavelli states that they should definitely lead with more fear over love but try to the best of your abilities to be incorporate both! 5  Machiavelli states that a prince should be more feared so they are able to keep respect and value. They are able to maintain order, peace, and balance in their country without total chaos.  For example if there was some sort of hardship that happened, the people that loved the prince are more likely to run away because they don’t trust him to be able to run a country and control the situation. 6  Machiavelli stated that fear preserves loyalty of men better than love because they are afraid of punishment and the unknown of what could happen if they did something wrong.  Compared to love where they live in a world where they can basically do whatever they want, and since they have such a good relationship with the prince it will all be ok. 7 According to Machiavelli there are many ways for a prince to inspire fear without being hated such as…  They can show authority and Pristine  Not show arrogance and display continuous threats  An example he uses is the prince is not allowing the government to take peoples properties because what is rightfully theirs is rightfully theirs  Also all crimes and punishments must be justified  These would release the pressure off the people and also build trust, but also show authority as well How is this Possible? 8 Hannibal and Scipio were princes who ruled a land, and both ruled with love and compassion towards their people. What ended up happening though is the people walked over them, hated and him, didn’t trust him, and eventually wanted to kill them. This goes to prove that a kind leader isn't all its cracked up to be, it has its advantages but at the end of the day death overrides all of them. Hannibal and Scipio Answer to Question 34
