Pedagogical Frameworks and Content Maria Meletiou & Efi Paparistodemou

PEDAGOGICAL FRAMEWORKS AND INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT WP2 (Months 3-20): Development of statistics education pedagogical frameworks and instructional content WP7 (Months 30-36): Final revisions of pedagogical frameworks and content

PEDAGOGICAL FRAMEWORK FOR EFFECTIVE DELIVERY OF ONLINE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Will be developed jointly by the pedagogical and technical experts in the team Will incorporate both pedagogical and technical considerations regarding delivery of online professional development Will be developed at the beginning of the project to guide the design of the professional development program Will be revised based on feedback from pilot delivery

OVERALL AIM OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Enhance the quality of statistics education offered in European elementary and middle schools by facilitating intercultural professional development of teachers using contemporary technological and educational tools and exemplary web-based materials and resources.

PEDAGOGICAL AND DIDACTICAL APPROACH Building an online learning community that brings together teachers and teacher educators Designing the distance education environment as a framework for flexible learning, regarding teachers as the main agents of their professional development, supported by an environment rich in challenges and interactions Strategies employed will include open-ended investigations, simulations, visualizations, collaboration and reflection on one’s own and on others’ ideas and experiences. Will provide a learning environment that will serve as a model to the participating teachers

TECHNICAL ASPECTS Technical considerations regarding delivery of online professional development: Limitations in terms of equipment Limitations in software availability Protocols Limited network bandwidth Different time zones, etc.

AIMS OF THE DAY Find the topics for designing the activities (based on the curriculum of each country) Divide the topics to be able to design activities

CONTENT CYPRUS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM Data Collection, Analysis, and Interpretation Graphical Representations: Bar Graph, Pie-chart, Pictogram, Line Plot Numerical Measures: Arithmetic Mean Probability: Simple Experiments, Predictions

An example of an activity in Tinkerplots Students’ thinking about data - developing an aggregate view of data vs see individual cases or subgroups of individuals with the same or nearly the same value - describing centers of distributions - staying grounded in the data

An example of an activity in Tinkerplots Features of an activity: - an introduction that provides context and motivation - use of prior knowledge to speculate about the data - plotting and investigation

An example of an activity in Tinkerplots Is Your Backpack Too Heavy for you? Aims: Students to - calculate and order percents - compare related sets of data - make observations about differences between groups - use the concept of mean and distribution Find out if students in the higher grades carry heavier backpacks for their body weight than students in the lower grades (Make a graph…)
