An Overview of the Data Analysis and Probability Standard for School Mathematics? 2

3 Instructional programs from prekindergarten through grade 12 should enable all students to— Data Analysis and Probability Standard Formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them; Select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyze data; Develop and evaluate inferences and predictions that are based on data; Understand and apply basic concepts of probability.

4 Data Analysis and Probability Standard for Grades 6 – 8.

5 Formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them. Students should be able to compare characteristics within a population and between populations; Students should become proficient in collecting data from relevant resources; Students should learn to use frequency bar graphs and histograms to represent data.

6 Select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyze data. Students should become proficient at using measures of central tendency; Students need to think about measures of center in relation to the spread of distribution; Students should consider how well different graphs represent important characteristics of data sets.

7 Develop and evaluate inferences and predictions that are based on data. When students collect and represent data they should be driven by a desire to answer questions on the basis of the data; Students should become proficient in the use of two variable scatter plots with linear relations; Students should use technology in developint and evaluating data.

8 Understand and apply basic concepts of probability. Students should use appropriate terminology in their discussions of chance and probability to make predictions and conjectures; Students should be able to use basic notions of chance and some basic knowledge of number theory; Teachers can help students relate probability to their work with data and analysis.; Students should work with both actual experiences and computer simulations in developing data sets.

9 Data Analysis and Probability Standard for Grades 9 – 12.

10 Formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them. Students should design surveys, observational studies, and experiments that reduce bias and randomize sampling; Students should understand the differences among various kinds of studies and which types of inferences may be drawn from each; Students should understand the basic ways to display data.

11 Select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyze data. When students be able to calculate summary data; Students should be able to determine regression coefficients, regression equations, and correlation coefficients using technological tools; Recognize how linear transformations of univariate data affect shape, center, and spread.

12 Develop and evaluate inferences and predictions that are based on data. Students should sue simulations to explore variability of sample statistics and construct sampling distributions; Students should understand how sample statistics reflect the values of population parameters; Students should evaluate published reports that are based on data by examining the design, the appropriateness, and validity of conclusions; Students should understand how statistical techniques are used to monitor process in the workplace.

13 Understand and apply basic concepts of probability. When students understand the concepts of sample space and probability distribution and construct sample spaces and distributions in simple cases; Students should use simulations to construct empirical probability distributions; Students should understand the concepts of conditional probability and independent events; Students should understand how to compute the probability of a compound event.

14 Working in groups (7-8, 9-10 and 11-12), develop a lesson for students in that band width that will illustrate at least one of the bullets in the Data Analysis and Probability Standard. We will leave time at the end of the period to present your ideas. Use the format that we have been working with in this class. Pick a topic and develop the way in which you will present it so that at least one of the bullets is used. You are also expected to use bullets from the process standards.

15 Assignment Prepare for your last practice teaching.
