2  If you are aged 3 to 21, with special needs you are entitled to free special education IDEA INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES EDUCATION ACT

3 Ages 3-21

4  A neurological disorder that results in social impairments, difficulty in communication, or slowed learning ability  There are many forms of autism  Doctors believe that autism is caused by both genetic and environmental factors  There is no cure for autism and the treatments are specific to each patient AUTISM

5 A condition that is characterized by little or no use of sight and hearing It causes a need for advanced developmental, communication and educational help Approximately 45,000-50,000 children with this impairment Children can learn to communicate with sign language, the help of a hearing aid, and devices such as the Teletouch DEAF BLINDNESS

6 Defined by: An unexplainable inability to learn The inability to maintain social relationships Inappropriate behaviors in normal circumstances Schizophrenia There are outward signs (misbehavior, aggression) and inner signs (depression, feeling withdrawn or anxious) Special education opportunities include structured classrooms and reward for good behavior EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCE

7  This causes a loss in hearing  Can be inherited, caused by problems during birth, or acquired at any age from head injuries, infectious diseases, drug use etc…  This can be treated medically, helped with a hearing aid or cochlear devices HEARING IMPAIRMENT

8  An umbrella term including mental retardation, dementia, and acquired brain injuries  A person with this may have a hard time learning in a traditional classroom and managing daily life skills  The needs of a person with this disease depends on the severity and condition of their disease INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES

9  A combination of disabilities that affect a person’s learning ability  There is a wide range of specific combinations and disabilities that fall under this term  Both the environment and individual tasks should be altered for people with multiple disabilities  The handheld person computer (like an Ipad) has been increasing in use with these patients MULTIPLE DISABILITIES

10  This included a wide variety of disorders  Most of these impairments develop at or before birth  Most children with an orthopedic impairment have no problems learning, but the teacher may focus on seating arrangements, specialized instruction, and keeping in mind that the child may need extra attention, etc… ORTHOPEDIC IMPAIRMENTS

11  Having limited strength, alertness and stimuli  This can include ADD, AD/HD, Epilepsy, heart problems, etc…  Early intervention and special education options are available for children that fall under the “other impairments” category HEALTH IMPAIRMENTS

12  A disorder that includes difficulty in the process of understanding and writing/speaking language  The number of students with specific learning disability is very large  Specialized instruction and additional tutoring is often used with children with these disabilities SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITY

13  There are four main impairments that are affected  articulation  fluency  voice  language  This includes stuttering, a language delay, and a lower ability to learn and use language SPEECH OR LANGUAGE IMPAIRMENT

14  Occurs when an outside force injures the brain  It is a major cause of death and disability  Teaching those affected by this varies depending on the severity of the injury  This can cause emotional instability, depression, and dementia TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

15  This includes partial or total loss of hearing  This causes a need for constant and regular use of speech, language and auditory help  Help includes:  Sign language  Note taking  Amplification devices DEAFNESS
