8 Chapter 4: Respect in Stewardship “Respect is the value that multiplies the desire of both the leader and follower to work harder and deliver consistently excellent performance” (Dye, 2010, p. 40). “Respect for self and others is the nucleus of all activities, especially in management.” (Dye, 2010, p. 40). 9 Self-Esteem “…is an individual’s respect for her own convictions, actions, imperfections, and abilities.” (Dye, 2010, p. 41). What are some characteristics of a person who does not have self-esteem?

10 Self-Centeredness “…is an individual’s overly favorable sense of his own abilities, views, decisions, and needs” (Dye, 2010, p. 41). What are some characteristics of a self-centered person?

11 Low Self-Esteem & High Self-Centeredness These stewards (leaders): ▫“do not respect of trust others; ▫alienate others with a domineering attitude; ▫are exasperating because they seek/demand so much approval; ▫cause unnecessary work and waste time; and ▫engender disloyalty, stress, and fear” (Dye, 2010, pp. 41-42).

13 How a Steward Can Show Respect “Become a collaborator Be aware of other’s definition of respect Establish a feedback system Be genuine Give credit and acknowledge accomplishments Offer help or coaching Be self-aware Take responsibility for mistakes and apologize Learn the principle of affirmation Show appreciation Show enthusiasm” (Dye, 2010, pp. 42-49).

14 Chapter 5: Ethics & Integrity “As are other leadership values, ethics and integrity are interrelated” (Dye, 2010, p. 54). “Ethics is a person’s capacity for staying within that moral scope” (Dye, 2010, p. 54). Integrity-”…the quality that allows a person to differentiate right from wrong” (Dye, 2010, p. 54).

15 How Can Leaders Handle Ethical Challenges With Integrity? “Adopt an organizational code of ethics Adopt a personal code of ethics Tell the truth, and do not exaggerate Do as you say Use power appropriately Admit mistakes March to the beat of your drum Be trustworthy Manage expense accounts judiciously

16 Chapter 6: Interpersonal Connection “Leaders who have people skills are marked by a profound respect for the character of others and a deep faith in their potential, which is why they enjoy being with people and interact with them” (Dye, 2010, p. 65). “The backbone of people skills is reciprocity, because without it no interaction or relationship occurs” (Dye, 2010, p. 65).
