2 2 Project Location ► Located in Leonardtown, MD ► Phase 1 project length is 0.4 miles ► The Phase 1 project extends from approximately 1200 feet west of the intersection at Abell and Moakley Streets to 900 feet east.

3 3 Purpose and Need ► Improve the vehicular safety and traffic operations along MD 5; ► Provide adequate intersection capacity; ► Support existing and planned development; ► Address pedestrian and bicycle safety; ► Provide vehicular access to residences, businesses, schools, St. Mary’s Hospital, and places of worship; and ► Accommodate horse-drawn carriage traffic associated with the nearby Amish and Mennonite communities.

4 4 Project History ► Project Planning study initiated January 2007 ► Alternates Public Workshop – December 2008 ► Alternatives Retained for Detailed Study (ARDS) Concurrence - January 2009 ► Location/Design Public Hearing - June 2012 ► Environmental Document Approval – June 2014 Document recommended separating the project in phases. The first phase would include the improvements at the Abell and Moakley Intersection with MD 5 ► Phase 1 project fully funded – June 2015

9 Proposed Improvements 9 ► Widening the roadway to include six-foot-wide bicycle-compatible shoulders in each direction. The added shoulders will also accommodate horse-and-buggies. ► Reconstructing sidewalks and pedestrian ramps ► Constructing left-turn lanes at the intersection of Abell/Moakley Streets and MD 5 ► Installing a continuous grass median throughout the project limits ► Improving curbs and gutters ► Resurfacing, and/or restriping roadway pavement ► Installing drainage systems and stormwater management facilities ► Adding landscaping and planting trees ► Stream Relocation and restoration
