Created at Chain of Lakes Elementary Winter Haven, Florida

Problem: Our Kindergarten Teachers needed more one-on-one support to help our kindergartners with their ABC’s, sounds, High Frequency Words(HFW), numbers and colors. We could not identify enough volunteers to fill the much needed gap at the Kindergarten level.

Solution: Utilize our own 3 rd -5 th Graders to build our volunteer base to cover the much needed Kindergarten level. Using the Resources/Templates shared and following the outlined process a Kinder-Buddy Program can be developed at any school.

Plan of Action: Recruitment Kinder-Buddy Kits Implementation Recognition

Resources/Templates:

Recruitment: Notice to grade 3-5 teachers Option to use either a tri-fold brochure or an application process

Kinder-Buddy Kit: Confirm Content with K-teachers and create Kinder-Buddy Kits using agreed upon chart We created the Kinder-Buddy Kit by using a legal sized Pendaflex file and labeling legal sized folders, using the following label template that can be changed for your needs; we used 3-5 flashcard sets for each area in separated ziploc bags for each set **All flashcards needed are located in the templates file.**

Implementation: Using Nom. Forms/Interest Forms, create Parent email distribution, Create Assignment & Attendance sheet Send out Parent email regarding training day(s), including Info/Guidelines for signature.

Implementation: Train using Info/Guidelines, when Kinder-Buddy brings in signed guidelines by parent, assignment and attendance sheet is double checked and Name Tag/Lanyard can be given. Note Name tag should stay with Kinder-Buddy Kit, $2 replacement fee if lost. Post Attendance, Assignments and contact info for questions. If a strike needs to be given to a Kinder-Buddy, the following memo can be used.

Recognition: Remind your Kindergarten teachers to appreciate and thank these Kinder-Buddies throughout the year. Remind them that if KB is good at what they do and the teachers create a relationship with them they can return again to the same teacher next year. After your Kinder-Buddy program is a smashing success all year long you will have the opportunity to recognize them and appreciate them through their end of the year awards ceremony as well as advertise your program and hand out brochures for next year. Using your attendance sheet we can confirm active status, which homeroom teacher they have and get certificates created. We also gave Classroom Hero Pins at COLE. A template of our speech is available for you to tweek for your needs..
