Generic FEC Software (aka FES) support – As experts in FES, provide help and guidance on complex problems (memory leak, crashes…) – Available for any executable whatever the fwk. 19 FESA2 End of Life/Support When? From end 2015 Support? Development tools & generic FES support Last FESA2 version is 2.10.6. No new version, bugs won’t be fixed since it works today. No developer support => read-only source code on NFS No new development in FESA2 allowed – block insert in CCDB? Minor fixes and improvements in existing classes allowed Development tools support until beginning LS2 – CVS, Shell tool, DB extraction, compilation… to maintain OP support: No FESA2 specific support but general FES support (gdb, valgrind,…) M.Vanden Eynden - BE/BI TB - May 21st 201519

24 Project for “Future Front-end platforms” Proposed by BE-CO and EN-ICE Motivation – VMEbus The VMEBus technology is widely considered as “legacy” in the embedded market and core components such as VMEbus bridges are discontinued The LHC experiments at CERN and major European and US Physics Laboratories (DESY, SLAC) are already running prospective studies and prototyping activities in order to replace the VMEbus technology – PXI, PICMG1.3 : rationalisation and new roadmaps have to be defined – PLCs : present recommendation is 17 years old, new roadmap needed for the next 15 years – New technological opportunities (mTCA.4, IPC, cRIO, etc.) – Emerging “high availability” requirements from HL-LHC (R.Schmidt) M.Vanden Eynden - BE/BI TB - May 21st 201524

25 Project for “Future Front-end platforms” Scope – Debriefing of current situation – Gathering of HL-LHC era requirements – Evaluation of new Technologies – Collaboration with other Labs and PH department – Proof of concept (pilot operational installations) Time Line – Project definition and approval by end Q1 2015 – Project organization in place by Q2 2015 – JCOP workshop outcome in 10/2015 – Requirements study for HL-LHC completed by Q4 2015 – Technology survey, small prototypes with industry completed by Q4 2016 – Recommendation for Candidate technologies ready by end 2016 – Approval and first pilot installations in 2017 Criticality – Choice of platform is critical as the investment in budget and manpower is extremely important (tens of millions, lifetime of at least 15 years) – Short/Medium term covered by new frame contracts through Finance Committee M.Vanden Eynden - BE/BI TB - May 21st 201525
