Bellringer What is one way that fungi are beneficial to humans?

Fungi The male party animal!!!

Let’s see what you remember. Write the answers to the following questions in the margin of your notes. Are fungi eukaryotic or prokaryotic? Are fungi consumers or producers? Are fungi unicellular or multicellular?

General characteristics So, eukaryotes or prokaryotes? All fungi are eukaryotes. (#1) I forget, what does this mean? They have a nucleus.

General Characteristics Consumers or producers? consumers Fungi must live on or near their food because they must absorb their food after secreting their digestive juices on their food. (#2)

General Characteristics Many fungi get their energy from dead plants or animals. What do we call organisms that get their energy from dead things? Decomposers are organisms that get their energy from dead organisms.

General Characteristics Unicellular or mulitcellular? Actually, fungi can be unicellular or multicellular, but most fungi are multicellular. (#6)

General Characteristics Multicellular fungi are made up of hyphae. Hyphae: chain of cells that forms a filament that is similar to a plant. The hyphae grow in a twisted clump called the mycelium, which is the major of the fungus. (#12)

Threadlike Fungi Shapeless, fuzzy fungi that are usually decomposers Asexual reproduction: sporangia form at the tips of the hyphae (threads) and release spores (#4) Sexual reproduction: two hyphae from separate fungi join and forms spores (#5)

Sac Fungi Mildew, yeast, truffles, morels Sexual reproduction: formation of a sac called an ascus. Spores form inside the ascus (#8) Yeast: unicellular and reproduces asexually by budding in which a new yeast cell pinches off the old one (#9)

Club Fungi Includes mushrooms Sexual reproduction: hyphae develop into clublike structures called basidia. Spores develop inside the basidia (#14)

Imperfect Fungi These fungi do not fit into any of the other three categories of fungi. (#19) Only reproduce asexually. Many are parasites including the fungus that causes athletes foot and aflatoxin which can cause cancer. Penicillium: the source of the antibiotic penicillin (#20)
