What types of organisms do I infect? AWESOME! ANIMALS ONLY!!! What are the circle things sticking out of me called and what are they used for? GREAT!!! Glycoprotein Spikes and used for attachment. You’re awesome! My Turn! What type of virus am I? You’re SO right! I’m a bacteriophage! What type of cells do I infect? You’re so smart! ONLY BACTERIA!

Essential Question What role do bacteria and other microorganisms play in the environment? Standard 11C – summarize the role of microorganisms in both maintaining and disrupting the health of both organisms and ecosystems. PG 112

When growth conditions become unfavorable, many bacteria form structures called spores. An endospore is a spore that is formed when a bacterium produces a thick internal wall that encloses its DNA and a portion of its cytoplasm. When conditions improve, the endospore will germinate and the bacterium will begin to grow again.

As decomposers, bacteria help the ecosystem recycle nutrients, maintaining equilibrium in the environment.

The process of converting nitrogen gas into a form plants can use is known as nitrogen fixation. Nitrogen fixation is important because it allows nitrogen atoms to continually cycle through the biosphere.

Human use bacteria for many purposes: Production of foods and beverages Industrial uses Help human health Biotechnology

E. coli is the bacteria that lives in the human colon. As it processes our undigested food it secretes vitamins.

Louis Pasteur was the first scientist to show that bacteria cause disease. Bacteria cause disease in one of two general ways: 1.Some bacteria damage the cells and tissues of the infected organism directly by breaking down the cells for food. 2.Other bacteria release toxins that travel throughout the body interfering with the normal activity of the host.

Antibiotics are compounds that break down or block the growth and reproduction of bacteria. Antibiotics have led to a dramatic increase in life expectancy during the past two centuries.

Yes. Most bacteria are harmless. Three methods used to control bacterial growth are sterilization, disinfectants, and food processing.

Sterilization destroys bacteria by subjecting them to great heat. Disinfectants are chemical solutions that kill pathogenic bacteria. Disinfectants include most cleaning materials.

Scientists are concerned about the overuse of antibacterial chemicals because their use increases the likelihood that common bacteria will eventually evolve to become resistant to them.

Foods stored in the refrigerator stay fresh longer because the bacteria take much longer to grow and multiply at colder temperatures.

Essential Question What role do bacteria and other microorganisms play in the environment? PG 112 Microorganisms in Society: Video Guide 1.You will need a partner, a laptop, and headphones. 2.Each person will have their own handout. 3.Follow the instructions on the handout. a.Look on YouTube for the videos provided and answer the questions (Video links found on my website). b.There are 2 essay questions provided on the back with instructions. 4.Assignment will be due on Tuesday (No School Monday) with a Mini-Quiz.
