1 First Aid Sprains, Fractures, and other injuries

2 Nosebleeds  Nosebleeds are very common  Follow these steps:  UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS  Make sure injured person pushes their head forward  Pinch at the bridge of the nose  Never tell someone with a nosebleed to blow their nose because it might irritate the inside of the nose and make the bleed worse

3 Missing teeth?  Try and locate the tooth  Then, follow these steps:  Do not hold the tooth by its root  Rinse it with water  Try and place the tooth back into the gum  If unsuccessful, place tooth into a glass of tap water or milk to prevent it from drying out  Go to a dentist immediately

4 Fractures  Two kinds:  Open or Compound – breaks through skin  Closed – beneath the skin  Do not move the victim  Apply pressure to the wound  Apply a splint!  Make sure the splint is long enough to extend above and below the fracture  Apply cold packs or ice  Wait for help to arrive

5 Sprains  Stretching or twisting of the ligaments  When a victim has a sprain, you RICE  R – Rest  I – Ice  C – Compression  E - Elevation

6 Dislocations  When a bone pops out of its joint  NEVER try to reinsert the bone  What to do?  Call 9-1-1 immediately  Splint the affected area (or use a triangle bandage)  Apply ice
