I can analyze the growth of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai kingdoms including trading centers such as Timbuktu and Jenne, which would later develop into centers of culture and learning.

In the A.D. 1200s, a small state named Mali conquered Ghana and created a new empire. A king named Sundiata Keita united the people of Mali and ruled for 25 years. He was known as the “Lion King.” He conquered land from the Atlantic Coast to the cities of Timbuktu and Jenne, putting Mali in control of the gold mines.

Mali had a government like Ghana’s, but royal officials had more responsibilities because Mali had more territory, more people, and more trade. Kings controlled a strong central government. Generals controlled the provinces and protected Mali from invaders. Mansa Musa was Mali’s most powerful king.
