2 I can analyze the growth of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai kingdoms including trading centers such as Timbuktu and Jenne, which would later develop into centers of culture and learning.

3  In the A.D. 1200s, a small state named Mali conquered Ghana and created a new empire.  A king named Sundiata Keita united the people of Mali and ruled for 25 years.  He was known as the “Lion King.”  He conquered land from the Atlantic Coast to the cities of Timbuktu and Jenne, putting Mali in control of the gold mines.

7  Mali had a government like Ghana’s, but royal officials had more responsibilities because Mali had more territory, more people, and more trade.  Kings controlled a strong central government.  Generals controlled the provinces and protected Mali from invaders.  Mansa Musa was Mali’s most powerful king.
