The critical events that caused this development. By: Kensey Estes

Around 3000 B.C, Iberian tribes from North Africa invaded the Iberian Peninsula and later named it after themselves.

It is believed that there were Celts in the Iberian Peninsula as far as Cadiz. They brought aspects of the Hallstatt culture in the 6 th to 5 th centuries B.C. “…In short, the dividing of the Celtic peoples into two groups is an ancient event, of very importance, connected with the great facts of European prehistory. It is the consequence of the breaking-up of the Italo-Celtic community.” -“The History of the Celtic People”

Rome defeated Carthago and invaded the colonies in Spain. They ended up conquering the entire Iberian Peninsula. Spaniards completely absorbed the Roman culture and it is still very evident today in their language. The Roman empire began to fall in 409 and the Gothic tribes invaded the peninsula establishing their own kingdom in 419.

They arrived on the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula in search for metals and ended founding trading posts in Cadiz, Malaga, and Seville. Phoenicians traded in silver, copper, and tin while bringing in eastern trading goods. They based their economy on trade.

In 264 BC, conflict aroused the Carthaginian (Punic) Empire and Rome. Known as the Punic Wars, this started a series of wars. These wars were fought on a wide area including Carthage, the Iberian Peninsula and Italy. In 146 BC, the conflict ended 188 years later and was finished when Carthage was seized and razed.
