2. GE 121 – Engineering Design - 2009 Getting Started: Managing the Design Process There is an analogous map of managing design to the process maps used for design itself. The steps are:  Project definition  Determining what the client has in mind for the project  Project framework  Determining the specific tasks to be done, and organizing a team  Project scheduling  Assigning tasks and reaching agreement on when they must be accomplished.  Project tracking, evaluation and control  Monitoring the project to insure that deadlines are met, tasks accomplished, and resources used appropriately.

GE 121 – Engineering Design - 2009 Organizing Design Teams (cont’d)  Team Dynamics and Brainstorming  It is important to develop respect for the ideas and talents early in the process  One formal technique for generating ideas (and getting to know one another in a fun and respectful environment) is brainstorming.

GE 121 – Engineering Design - 2009 Organizing Design Teams (cont’d)  Constructive Conflict  Conflict is inevitable in team settings  Effective teams work to use the conflict appropriately to generate ideas and understanding and to improve solutions  There are five basic strategies to deal with conflict: Avoidance Smoothing Forcing Compromise Constructive engagement - this is the only one that consistently gets to “win-win” results
