11/17

 Talk about new seats…  Review quote analysis process.  Practice as a class.  Work individually.  End Goal: Be able to explain the importance of a quote. Eventually, use this skill to connect quotes to major themes.

 They are coming.  Who needs to sit close (1 st three rows) in order to see?

 WHY IS THIS QUOTE IMPORTANT?!?!?!!  Answers must be AT LEAST three complete sentences. Any less, it is completely wrong.

 What does it reveal about the plot?  What does it reveal about a character?  Does this quote make you feel differently about a character/situation?  Can you use this quote to characterize someone?  Does this quote connect to/advance the theme?  Does this quote advance the plot or offer a twist?  Can you connect to this quote?

 First, find the quote in the book.  Second, read a little before and a little after to refresh your memory.  USUALLY, a paragraph before and after, but you can read as much as you need!  Third, look over the questions and decide which one best applies to the quote.  Write a brief analysis of that quote.

 “There is a beast in my gut, I can hear it scraping away at the inside of my rib.” (51)

This quote is important because it reveals something about Melinda. This quote reveals that Melinda has a serious secret she is keeping and she is not coping well. She is physically and mentally falling apart. I think that if she doesn’t share it, she is going to get worse.

 “That’s not the reaction I was hoping for, but I guess it was positive.” (64)  “This revolutionary spirit is even breaking out in social studies class.” (67)  “I can’t get any words out, it is too dry.” (63)  “Maybe I’ll be an artist if I grow up.” (78)  “I am actually grateful to go back to school.” (74)  “I almost tell them right then and there. Tears flood my eyes.” (72)
