1 January 14, 2015 WARM UP D-2

2 Learning Targets 1. I can make inferences to deepen understanding of Inside Out & Back Again Inference = Details + Background Knowledge 2. I can cite evidence from the novel to explain how incidents reveal aspects of Ha’s character as she is shaped by war. cite evidence = proof/details from the text 3. I can use context clues to figure out word meanings 4. I can participate in discussions about the text. Talk only to the group or partner you are assigned. If another person is too loud let the teacher know. Stay on the topic.

3 Any changes to your original thoughts about the gist?
HOMEWORK CHECK What is the gist? “Inside Out” Listen as I read. Any changes to your original thoughts about the gist?

4 TEXT-DEPENDENT QUESTIONS
THINK-PAIR-SHARE 1. How do the events in this poem connect to the first poem, “1975: Year of the Cat,” and the title of the novel? This poem is about predicting the future (stanza 1) just like the first poem was dependent on the events of Tet to foretell the year. “Inside Out” is part of the title of the book.

5 What does the fortune-teller foretell about the family’s future?
#2 WITH FACE PARTNER

6 #3 Ha lives in a war-torn country.
How does she hope her life will be turned inside out? WITH SHOULDER PARTNER

7 #4 Ha knows that “inside out” probably means something different
#4 Ha knows that “inside out” probably means something different. What will probably happen? WITH WHOLE GROUP

8 QUICK WRITE A Quick Write is a short piece of writing (a paragraph) that answers a question about the text. It needs: A FOCUS SENTENCE (a topic sentence) THREE (3) PIECES OF SPECIFIC EVIDENCE (DETAILS) FROM THE TEXT THREE EXPLANATIONS THAT FOLLOW EACH PIECE OF EVIDENCE CONCLUSION

9 Based on what you have read in the novel, what can you infer about what will happen to Ha and her family? Be sure to use details from the text to support your answer.

10 Anchor chart and Model- Class work/ Notes
Quick Write #1 What kind of person is Ha? Use specific evidence from the text to write a paragraph in which you discuss ONE of Ha’s personality traits. Make sure to cite evidence by identifying the page and stanza

11 Detail/Evidence Information about Ha
Page Inference/Reasoning What this shows about Ha’s interests, traits, values, or beliefs “Now I am ten” 1 She is on the edge of growing up. “Mother warns” and “Mother insisted” 1, 2 She has a mom who is pretty stern, in charge, demanding. I’m guessing Ha doesn’t like this. “But last night I pouted” and “An old, angry knot expanded in my throat.” 2 Ha has a temper. (Ha doesn’t say directly that she has a temper, but the reader can take the evidence from the text and combine it with his/her own background knowledge to understand her as a character.)
