2 Theoretical Objectives
To provide a broad based knowledge of Basic Surgical Principles. To provide a broad based basic knowledge of Common Surgical Diseases (Epidemiology, aetiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, classification, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, investigations, overall management, specific treatment, complications and prognosis).

3 Clinical Objectives Perform and demonstrate skills of careful history taking. Perform and demonstrate skills to conduct a comprehensive clinical examination. Demonstrate appropriate skills to interpret clinical signs. Record and present full and summarized history and clinical examination findings. Demonstrate knowledge of the symptoms and signs of common surgical diseases. Demonstrate reasoning skill to formulate a differential diagnoses. Demonstrate basic knowledge of investigation and management of surgical diseases and surgical emergency. Adopt self-learning techniques and use of different resources of teaching aids. Learn and demonstrate the spirit of dedication and concern. Professional behavior in dealing with patients and their relatives. Respect patient’s wishes, and privacy. Learn importance of confidentiality of patient’s information. Learn to communicate with patient and their families in simple language.

8 Tutorials During the weeks of hospital posting (1st -4th week)
At the ALMAAREFA Medical College Sessions presented/ moderated by a teacher. Cover the areas of history taking, clinical examination of different systems and body regions, laboratory data and imaging study interpretations. Each student will present 1 interesting case seen during hospital postings for evaluation.

12 Hospital postings In surgical units for 4 weeks (Week 2-5).
Spend time in OPD, in-patient, operating room and emergency room. Actively participate in history taking, physical examination and discussing differential diagnosis. Present patient’s case history, physical examination and participate in case discussion. Follow up and interpret investigation (blood, imaging) results. Discuss management plan and attend surgery with the treating team. Maintain a logbook- document all patients seen, procedures attended/participated and get it signed by a consultant/ registrar/ tutor. Display professional behavior at all time. Must abide by the hospital rules. Must strictly adhere to the confidentiality of patients and hospital. Must follow the dress code. Carry own pen torch and stethoscope.

Reading x-rays and other imaging techniques of various surgical diseases and surgical traumas Interpretation of related investigations (e.g. blood, biochemistry, serology, etc.). Nasogastric tube Wound drains IV line PR exam Prostate examination Proctoscopy Colostomy management Wound care Suturing Breast exam Catheterization (Male & Female)

15 Methods of assessments
1. MCQ- 30 Marks (90 questions) at ALMAAREFA MEDICAL COLLEGE 2. Slide show: 20 Marks - 10 slides (Spot diagnosis, Lab. Results, Imaging studies, Surgical specimens, Intraoperative findings , Common instruments used in clinical practice) Each slide will be of 2 marks and will have 2 questions. 3. Clinical: 40 Marks Each student - two short cases assessed by two different examiners.(20 marks for each short case)  (History taking skill, physical examination and the management of a given short case)  4.Case presentation: 5 Marks Each student - one case (SOAP format) in tutorial session. The evaluation will be based on a standard form from the college. 5.Logbook (college form) : 5 Marks Each student will submit a complete cases / skill records seen / learnt during hospital rotation for evaluation.
