2  Archipelago- Large group of islands  Dominance- state of having the main influence, authority, or control  Maritime- relates to the sea or to navigation, commerce, of shipping

3  Alfred T. Mahan was raised in a Navy family.  His father taught at West Point.  He graduated from West Point second in his class.

4  Mahan became a line officer and was involved in numerous maritime mishaps during his time in active naval duty.  Mahan was asked to give lectures at the Naval War College.  These lectures were published in 1890 under the title, The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660- 1783.

5  The Influence of Sea Power Upon History became the basis of almost all of his later work.  A. Mahan believed that sea power was the key to national security and to world dominace.  B. Mahan stated that the territory consisted, not just of the interior land, but also the length of its coastline and the strength of its harbors.

6  Mahan realized that America needed to protect her own interests through the means of sea power.  Of Mahan’s supporters, Theodore Roosevelt made the greatest contribution by constructing the “Great White Fleet,” a full proportion of navy and battleships and cruisers.

7  Mahan also published an article in the “Forum” entitled, “Hawaii and Our Future Sea Power.”  Has Hawaii been important to our sea power?

8  Mahan was very influential when it came to the Navy, and his influence will be evident throughout this unit.
