(3) What was Mahan’s punishment for upsetting President Grover Cleveland? (4) Describe some of the international influence that Mahan’s work had upon other countries. (5) How did naval power influence U.S. Imperialism, as well as the outcome of the Spanish-American War?

2 SLO Students will analyze the ideas of Alfred Mahan pertaining to a strong Navy and his "Anglo- Saxonism" ideology, as well as the causes leading to the Spanish-American War.

Anglo-Saxonism* Ethnocentrism Military bases and Overseas markets Jingoism – How did U.S. Naval Officer Alfred Mahan’s ideas affect U.S. imperialism as well as the actions of other countries? – Yellow journalism? – Causes of the Spanish-American War – Consequences of the Spanish-American War – Alaska and Hawaii – how did they become a part of the United States? – Changes in U.S. foreign policy, from “Monroe Doctrine” to “Roosevelt Corollary” and “dollar diplomacy” – “Open Door Policy” regarding China – Story of Panama Canal

11 It influenced the leaders of Germany, Japan, and Great Britain. “Arguably, Mahan’s writing had one malign result. He reinforced the Kaiser’s inclination to pursue German colonies and naval domination. This, in turn, proved a stimulus to the European arms race, and to the suspicions that culminated in World War I.”

13 Having a stronger Navy is a major cause of U.S. Imperialism abroad. Accomplishments of the Navy secure victory both in Cuba and in the Philippines.
