6 GENERAL OBJECTIVES :

7 Giving citizens the opportunity to interact and participate in constructing an ever closer Europe Developing a sense of European identity, based on common values, history and culture

8 GENERAL OBJECTIVES Fostering a sense of ownership of the European Union among its citizens Enhancing tolerance and mutual understanding between European citizens respecting and promoting cultural and linguistic diversity, while contributing to intercultural dialogue.

9 IMMIGRATION and EMPLOYMENT The mission of the Workshop, organized by Genista Research Foundation, is to discuss all issues related to immigrant’s employment and its possible improvements and how through volonteering immigrants can further integrate into society.

10 IMMIGRATION and EMPLOYMENT Immigration and employment are two important and delicate European and Maltese questions

11 IMMIGRATION and EMPLOYMENT From the year 2002 Malta began an immigrant’s destination Only in the 2012 in the island 1700 people are landing

12 IMMIGRATION and EMPLOYMENT Once immigrants land in Malta they are immediately taken to an Immigration Center The Maltese government offers two types of center the Open Center and the Closed Center

13 IMMIGRATION and EMPLOYMENT The Maltese legislation provides for 12 months of detention for asylum seekers and 18 months for illegal Only after this period immigrants are transferred to one of the Open Cente They can then start becoming legally working in Malta.

14 IMMIGRATION and EMPLOYMENT Many immigrants find it hard to have a stable job Usually they are forced to search for temporary unskilled jobs

15 IMMIGRATION and EMPLOYMENT As a rule immigrant are mostly doing hard and dirty jobs, which Maltese people are not willing to do like construction work or waste collection and in disposal center A lot of them are undeclared workers and in some cases they are paid lower wages

16 IMMIGRATION and EMPLOYMENT Immigrants employability is considered as the last step of a grown route.

17 IMMIGRATION and EMPLOYMENT There is a need to create a sustainable policy, improve synchronized activities through the strong interaction between Maltese society, local municipalities, educational supporting organizations, NGO’s, EU and immigrants.
