4 WHAT IS DIVERSITY…? Diversity… “Includes all the characteristics and experiences that define each of us as individuals.” At large level, these effect on communication because of different cultures.

5 THE ADVANTAGES OF DIVERSE WORK FORCE  The Diversity of today’s workforce brings distinct advantages to Businesses.  A broader range of views and Idea.  A better understanding of Diverse fragmented markets.  A broader pool of ability from which to connect.

6 INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION  It is the process of sending and receiving message between peoples whose cultural background could lead them to understand verbal and nonverbal signs differently.

7 EFFECTIVE INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION  To Communicate successfully you will need a basic grasp of the cultural differences you may encounter and how you should handle them.  Your effort to know and overcome on different Business through out the World.  Improve your contribution of all the employs in a Diverse workforce.

8 Challenges of Inter Cultural communication…  A Company's Cultural Diversity effects how its Business messages are planned, delivered, received and Interpreted. Culture Influences everything about Communication, including.  Language  Nonverbal signals  Word meanings  Time and Space issues  Rules of Human Relationship

9 THE OPPORTUNITIES IN A GLOBAL MARKET PLACE...  You will communicate with people from other cultures throughout your career.

10 Understanding The Concept of Culture…  Culture is a shared system of Symbols, Beliefs, Attitudes, values, Expectations and Behavior Norms. You belong to several cultures, each of which effects the way you communicate.

11 RECOGNIZING VARIATION IN A DIVERSE WORLD… Cultural differences can lead to miscommunication in the Workplace. There are Eight categories of Cultural differences. CONTEXTUAL DIFFERENCES LEGAL AND ETHICAL DIFFERENCES SOCIAL DIFFERENCES NONVERBAL DIFFERENCES AGE DIFFERENCES GENDER DIFFERENCES RELIGIOUS DIFFERENCES ABILITY DIFFERENCES

12 1… Contextual Differences  Cultural context is the pattern of Physical Cues, and Implicit understanding that conveys meaning between members of the same culture. It is divided into two parts  High-Context cultures It consist of Nonverbal Actions.  Low context Cultures It consist of verbal Communications.

13 2… Legal and Ethical Differences  Cultural differences can complicate Ethical choice like Low and High- Context cultures. You can keep your message ethical by applying four basic principles.  Actively seek mutual ground. To allow the clearest possible exchange of information take place from one culture or another culture and avoid insisting that interaction take place in term of one culture to another.  Send and receive messages without judgment. To allow Information to flow freely and the must trust each other.  Send messages that are Honest. To insure that the Information is True. Both parties must be fully aware of their personal and cultural biases.  Show respect for Cultural differences.

14 3… Social Differences  The Combination of formal and Informal rules Influences the overall behavior of most people in a society most of the time. Social rules can vary from Culture to Culture in the following part.  Attitude toward Work and Success Individual effort is a sign of superiority and that people who work hard are better than those who don’t.  Rules and Status Respect and rank are reflected differently from Culture to Culture in their working environment.  Use of Manners The rules of Polite Behavior vary from country to country.  Concept of Time Attitude towards Time, as Meeting schedules throughout the World.

15 4…Nonverbal Differences.  Nonverbal differences can vary from Culture to Culture. When you have the opportunity to interact with people in another culture, The best advise is to study the Culture in advance, then observe people behave in the following way.  Greetings Do people shake hands, bow or kiss tightly…?  Personal space When people are conversing, do they stand closer together or further away…?  Touching Do people touch each other on the arm to emphasize a a point or slap to each other on the back to show congratulation…?

16  Facial expressions Do people shake their head to indicate “No” and Nod then to indicate “Yes”.  Eye Contact Do people make frequent Eye contact or avoid it…?  Posture Do people relax in the office…?  Formality People who grew up in the Culture is not only a great way to learn but a good way to show respect as well.

17 5… Age Differences  A Culture’s views on Youth and Aging effect how people communicate with one another.

18 6… Gender differences  The Perception of man and women in Business also varies from Culture to Culture.

19 7… Religious Differences  Religion is a dominant Force in many Cultures and the Source of many differences between Cultures.
