2 Direct Object The police officer gave Jill a speeding ticket. –The direct object is what is given out. –“Speeding ticket” is the direct object.

3 Indirect Object The police officer gave Jill a speeding ticket. –The indirect object is who receives what is given out. –“Jill” is the indirect object.

4 Sentence Bob ran down the hallway because he was scared. –This is a sentence because it has a noun “Bob” and a verb “ran.”

5 Fragment Ran down the hallway. –This is a fragment because it has a verb “ran,” but it does not have a noun.

6 Verb Tenses I started evening shift yesterday. – past I start the B pump today. – present I will start the midnight shift Monday. - future

7 Word Usage Errors There will be no practice Saturday morning. (correct) Their will be no practice Saturday morning. (incorrect)

8 Formal vs. Informal Formal is more serious. –How are you doing sir? –Good morning miss! Informal is not serious –Hey Smitty! –Word up!

9 Adverbs Adverbs ending in –ly: –Carefully, badly, frequently, quickly, & slowly Adverbs that are common: –Almost, forward, often, so, too, & sometimes

10 Adjectives Adjectives that are common: –Fast, slow, old, young, tall, short, boring, interesting, fat, & skinny

11 Comma Usage Correct use of commas: –The meeting will be held on Monday, July 2. Incorrect use of commas –The holiday is on Friday, July, 4.
