FLUSHING BIBLE CHURCH Bible-Centered. Dispensational. Grace-Oriented. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever. Isaiah 40:8

LUKE Jesus: The Son of Man Who Seeks and Saves Jesus in All His Glory Luke 9:28-36

The Contrast, v. 26 “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.” Context, context, context The Son of Man is coming in His glory, and the glory of the Father, & angels The “Second Coming” – visible glory, from the Father, with angels, results in death Concerns Israel; Rev 19:11-19; Dan 7:13-14; Matt 25:31 The “Rapture” – in the air, taken to heaven, results in glorification Concerns the Church: John 14:1-3; 1 Thess 4:13-18; 1 Cor 15:50-57 Ashamed Church: Romans 1:16; 2 Tim 1:12 Israel: Matthew 25:31-46

The Coming Kingdom’s Glory, v. 27 “But I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.” I say to you truthfully A point of emphasis He cannot lie, Titus 1:2 Will not taste death Double emphasis – ο ὐ μη Until they see the Kingdom of God The resurrection? Pentecost? Destruction of Jerusalem? The Kingdom has begun? “Some” 3 Apostles will see Jesus in His glory in just a few short days…

Jesus in All His Glory, Luke 9:28-36 The Trek, v. 28 The Transformation, vv. 29-32 The Tabernacles, v. 33 The Testimony, vv. 34-36

The Trek, v. 28 Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. Eight days, or six? (Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8) He took along His inner circle for more training Peter – the Apostle to the Jews John – the Revelator, last surviving Apostle James – John’s brother, martyred (Acts 12:1-2) Went up on the mountain to pray

The Trek, v. 28 Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. Eight days, or six? (Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8) He took along His inner circle for more training; Luke 8:51 Peter – the Apostle to the Jews John – the Revelator, last surviving Apostle James – John’s brother, martyred (Acts 12:1-2) Went up on the mountain to pray Nothing new for Jesus; Luke 5:15-16; 6:12 (before choosing the 12) To pray – total dependence on the Father, seeking His will in this important event Wanted them to see His glory – John 17:22-26

The Transformation, v. 29 And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming. The appearance of His face “became different” Six days later Jesus *took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and *led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was TRANSFIGURED before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. Matt 17:1-2 Transfigured (μεταμορφοω metamorpho) – Exodus 34:29-35; Ezekiel 1:26- 28; John 1:14; Hebrews 1:1-4 Believers are to be “transfigured” also in this life, and the next! Romans 12:1-2 – be transformed by the renewing of your mind 2 Corinthians 3:18 – look at Christ’s glory and be transformed! 1 Cor 15:51-52, 1 John 3:2 – we shall be like Him

The Transformation, vv. 30-32 And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. Who is Jesus? He is not Elijah, and He is not a prophet of old – Luke 9:8, 20 Moses and Elijah – the “Law” and the “Prophets” The Scripture (Hebrew Bible) attests to the Messiah – Luke 24:27; 45-48 Jesus’ “departure” is THE point - exodus Luke 24:45; Isaiah 53 & Psalm 16:10, the sign of Jonah (Luke 11:29)

The Tabernacles, v. 33 And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— not realizing what he was saying. Let us make three tabernacles Tents (σκηνη skene) LLX – The Tabernacle, the “Tent of Meeting” – the place where God dwelt with His people, Exodus 40:34-38 Feast of Tabernacles (a.k.a. Booths or Sukkot) Looks back to God’s provision in the desert Looks forward to Him dwelling with His people in the Millennial Kingdom, Zech 14:16-21 “… not realizing what he was saying.” Peter thought the Kingdom had come

The Testimony, vv. 34-36 While he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “ This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen. The cloud began to “overshadow” them – έπισκιαζω episkiazo LXX translates “shakan” with this word – Shekinah Testimony from the cloud Luke 3:21-22; Deuteronomy 18:15 – “… you shall listen to Him.” The Scriptures and God Himself testify that Jesus is God John 8:24 – Recognize Jesus as God for salvation

Jesus in All His Glory, Luke 9:28-36 The Trek, v. 28 The Transformation, vv. 29-32 The Tabernacles, v. 33 The Testimony, vv. 34-36
