Self Concept Peer Leadership
2
What is Self-Concept? “Who Am I?” – strictly facts.
I am a fast runner. I am talkative. The way you think about yourself is the foundation for all other thoughts and the way you evaluate other information. If we don’t think highly of ourselves, we will assume that others are thinking the same way. We do not hear all things equally
3
Self Confidence The product of a positive self-concept – opinionated.
View the fact that you’re talkative as a good thing. People with self-confidence take risks, invest themselves in ideas, and are willing to think about different alternatives. They are also more able to think about the needs and concerns of others. Self-confidence flows from positive internal thoughts and beliefs that you hold about yourself. There are 9 aspects of self-confidence…
4
Feel Good About Who You are!
As we grow, we each experience a sense of well-being We are better than just “okay” We have a knowledge that we are loved and are able to do things well We have an identity that is more than what we do, it is who we are!
5
Have Regard for Others! Regard for others means that we consider the effect our actions and plans have on them. We all have things in common; this sharing allows us to feel compassion for others. Do you always act in the best interest of those around you? Why is having regard for others crucial as a leader?
6
Know Your Values and Standards!
We are an expression of our beliefs and principles. As we get to know ourselves better, we are able to tell whether or not we are acting in accord with those principles we say we “hold”
7
Exercise Self-Discipline!
A person with high self-esteem is able to direct his/her energies
8
Be Flexible! Flexibility is the art of accepting other points of view without being threatened by them.
9
Be Able to Accept Criticism!
We need to be able to hear others’ comments with grace, even if they aren’t said in the best possible way. We must realize that we all have areas in which we can grow, and being able to receive criticism well allows us the opportunity to grow more rapidly. Why would you want to be able to accept criticism as a leader?
10
Don’t Feel overwhelmed By Your Weaknesses!
Be able to accept the fact that we have limitations. Reality: No one does everything perfectly
11
Have Regard for your Abilities!
Each of us plays best when we play to our strengths We all have gifts and talents that we can and should use! Often times, this is confused with being too proud
12
Know Your Limitations and Try To Stretch Them!
We should not let our limitations defeat us. If you have a certain weakness, you will want to try to improve it. Be sure you aren’t in a situation where you’d need to rely on it as a strength.
