3 In partnership Implementation of the Knowledge and Skills statements  To prepare children and families social workers for meeting the new accreditation standards and new roles which the government is introducing within the coming months  To ensure that adults social workers are aware of the new standards and that these standards are reflected in day to day practice Why the South East London Partnership is doing this?

4 In partnership Implementation of the Knowledge and Skills statements  What’s in it for you  You’re at the forefront of understanding and applying the impact of the K&S in the workplace  You will have some evidenced CPD (a certificate will be emailed to you after the workshop)  You will have an action plan and resources to use in your on-going CPD (everything you see/get today will also be sent to you electronically)  You’ll be helping to understand how best to use the K&S in the current service delivery ‘climate’  You will provide feedback and evaluation (this will be via an on-line survey sent to you after the workshop  Updates to the information given today that are relevant to these workshops til March 2016 About this workshop

5 In partnership Knowledge and Skills statements  Sir Martin Narey’s review of social work education  Isabelle Trowler, Chief Social Worker – Child & Family services consulted on, and then published Knowledge and Skills statement in November 2014 “A child and family social worker should be able to do the following:”  Lyn Romeo, Chief Social Worker – Adults consulted on, and then published Knowledge and Skills statement in March 2015 “… what a social worker working with adults should know and be able to do by the end of their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE).” Background

11 In partnership Knowledge and Skills statements  The Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) “… the knowledge and skills set out in the published statement are specific to child and family social work. The PCF is an overarching standards framework intended to be applicable to all social workers in whatever role or setting. It is not government’s intention that the statement should replace the PCF.” (Child and Family KSS) “The statement is designed to strengthen and enhance the Professional Capabilities Framework by setting out what we expect of newly qualified social workers working in adult social care and importantly, reinforcing the support and arrangements employers need to provide as set out in the Standards for Employers.” (Adults KSS) Key issues

13 Development since March 2015 – for implementation This is a scenario-based assessment of critical reasoning and decision making Candidates will be observed in an assessment centre in three controlled interactive simulations of practice. They will then undertake a written exercise and engage in a discussion with the assessor to provide a rationale about the way they responded Employers will undertake direct observations of practice in a range of different contexts, quality of written work, and take responsibility for endorsing frontline practitioners and practice supervisor candidates as the assessment 1. Employer endorsement: This will comprise questions which test the candidate’s level of knowledge using questions which have only one correct answer (e.g. legislation, procedures, child development, mental health) 2. 17 In partnership Getting familiar with the KSS There are 6 scenarios on the worksheet. These are intended to help you explore the content of the K&S for your area of practice – child & family or adults. Scenario 2 – adults only; scenario 3 child and family only; Around the tables discuss the scenarios and identify the relevant parts of the K&S. Make notes on your individual worksheet – for future reference. Complete the large worksheet as feed back – will be collected at end of session. Exercise 1 - Scenarios

21 In partnership Getting familiar with the KSS 1.Individual activity – complete at least one / two sections using the relevant KSS 2.In pairs – share your thoughts with a colleague (in a similar role if possible), add to on the basis of discussion. 3.Make sure that you have completed your PDP Exercise 2a– self evaluation

23 In partnership Knowledge and Skills – next steps  What will you do with the work you have started today?  How will you continue to use the self-evaluation?  You have a critical reflection log which you can use to record learning and add to your CPD records (required by HCPC)  The tools and resources we’ve used today will be available to you electronically.  Remember, your colleagues will be coming along too. What will you be able to do in your teams/organisations as a result? Action Planning

24 In partnership Knowledge and Skills – next steps  Write down your individual action/s – use the action planning template  A request from the other group (i.e. practice supervisors or practitioners) in order to help you achieve your actions  Write actions and requests on post-it notes and put on the flip charts  Take time to look at what others have written Action Planning – as a result of this workshop

25 In partnership Knowledge and Skills – next steps  The Teaching Partnership want to review the types of actions you are setting  We will also ask you to record this on an on line evaluation form (so hang on to the template you’ve filled in today!)  The Teaching Partnership may ask you how you are progressing with your actions in a few months to help measure the impact of the K&S Action Planning

26 In partnership Knowledge and Skills – next steps  You will receive an on line evaluation. Please complete it!  This will also give you access to all of today’s resources and a CPD certificate.  The evaluation will be used  by Skills for Care to provide an overview report to the Partnership  by the Partnership in it’s reporting back to government as one of the Teaching partnership pilots  So please contribute to this crucial development in social work.
