2  In A.D. the Romans conquered the Celtic tribes of southern Britain and introduced a more advanced standard of living.  The Romans returned home, leaving Britons easy prey to invaders  Angles, Saxons, and Jutes-Germanic tribes invaded the land and took it for their own. This was the start of England

3  Feudalism:  land is divided among noble overlords, or barons.  Knights pledged their wealth and service to overlords who, in return, provided use of the land.  Serfs were peasants who pledged to the lord of the manor and were bound to the land.

4  Feudalism led to conflicts  In the early 12002, King John imposed heavy taxes on barons.  In 1215 a group of barons forced the King to agree to a Magna Carta, which stated that he would not raise taxes without their consent.

5  Beginning in 1337, the English and French waged a series of wars for control of lands in France. (Hundred Years’ War)  This conflict drained England financially.  Black Death:: Killed almost 1/3 of England’s people. This eroded the feudal system.  Shift in power with a rise of urban middle class

6  For Anglo-Saxons, warfare was a way of life  Every family/tribe had a warrior chief, who served a noble/warlord.  Warlords rewards their bravest followers with treasures in exchange for loyalty.

7  Storytellers created heroic songs to describe the good deeds of warriors Celebrated strength, courage, loyalty The songs provided models and goals to pursue Performed in mead-halls

8  A long narrative poem that recounts, in formal language, the exploits of a larger-than-life hero.

9  Poetic lines that have formal and elevated language  Main characters with heroic or superhuman qualities  Gods or godlike beings who intervene  Action involving fates of entire peoples  Begins at important part of action
