Physical and Chemical Changes Problem: Of the following four changes, how will you be able to identify if they are chemical changes or if they are physical changes? Hypothesis: If I see (what are your indicators of chemical changes), then I can conclude that it is a chemical change because these are all indicators that a chemical reaction has occurred. If I see (what are your indicators of physical changes), then I can conclude that it is just a physical change because these are all indicators that only a change in its physical form has taken place.

Part A Materials: -safety glasses-test tube -copper (II) sulphate -water -5mL scoopula Procedure: 1. In your table, describe the observable properties of the water and the copper (II) sulphate 2. Pour water into the test tube to a depth of about 4 cm (about 2 finger widths). 3. Add one scoop of cooper (II) sulphate and mix by shaking the test tube. 4. Record your observations in the table. 5. Take your test tube with the copper (II) sulphate and water to the next station for Part B of the lab

Part B Materials: -safety glasses-stirring rod -test tube with copper (II) sulphate solution -steel wool (about the size of ½ your thumb) Procedure: 1. In your table, describe the observable properties of copper (II) sulphate solution and the steel wool. 2. Using the stirring rod, push the piece of steel wool into the solution. 3. Record your observations.

Part C Materials: -safety glasses -test tube -hydrochloric acid (HCl) -magnesium strip (3cm) -medicine dropper Procedure: 2. In your table, describe the observable properties of the HCl and the magnesium strip. 1. Carefully put two medicine droppers of HCl in the test tube. 3. Add the magnesium strip into the HCl. 4. Record your observations into the table.

Part D Materials: -safety glasses -test tube-2 medicine droppers -potassium iodide solution (KI) -lead (II) nitrate solution (PbNO 3 ) Procedure: 1. In your table, describe the observable properties of the KI and the PbNO 3 2. Put one medicine dropper full of the potassium iodide solution in your test tube then pour one eye dropper full of the lead (II) nitrate solution into the same test tube. Ensure you do not put the medicine droppers from one flask into the other! 3. Record your observations into the table.

Test Chemicals and observable properties. What occurred? Chemical or Physical Change? Explain. A B C D Observations:
