3 Counterculture 1.Idealistic or disillusioned young, white middle class, hippies 2.It had grown hollow, materal & cold “Tune in, turn out, drop out” 3.Utopian ideals, ideal society closer to nature, full of love, empathy, tolerance, and cooperation 4.San Francisco – Height Ashbury, Chicago – Old Town, NY – Greenwich Village

4 5. Listening and playing rock and roll, outrageous clotthers, using drugs, communes 6. Charles Manson murders, death of Janis Joplin & Jimi Hendrick 7. Pop art, consumer oriebntated mass art, longer hair, beards, mustahce, colorful & causual fashions 8. Rock & Roll, Beatles,Woodstock 9. Causual approach to sex & social behavior, rise of homosexual rights, conservative backlash

5 Women’s movement 1.Men & women should be equal politically socially & economically 2.More women working, increase exposure of unfair status. Learn lessons from Civil Rights movement 3.Encourage women to speak openly about unhappiness, set ground work for women’s right movement

6 4. National Org. for Women; more education & equality in the workplace 5a. Shed light on women’s issues in the workplace 5b. In most cases outlawed paying men more then women 5c. Outlawed job discrimination by private employers 5d. Suppose to oversee law, but still held certain ideas of what women’s place was 5e. Prohibited federal funded schools from discrimination of women in sports & adminstration 5f. Gave females control of reproductive rights

7 6. Antifeminism, end laws protecting homemakers, lead to same sex marriage, end husbands responsibility to provide; law rejected 7. More women go to college & have carriers, Employers become more flexible w/ working women, still gap in pay

8 New Civil Rights 1.Companies & institutions actively recruit AA to help improve economic & social status 2.Reverse discrimination, qualified whites don’t get jobs 3.Transports kids outside of neighborhoods to achieve racial balance but whites go to private schools

9 What did Latinos Campaign for? How did some Latino individuals and groups go about getting what they want? What federal laws (if any) were passed to address these needs? 1. Improved working conditions and better treatment for farm workers Ceaser Chavez United Farm Workers 3wk feast & boycott grapes None, but owners increase wages & improve conditions 2. Educational programs for Spanish- speaking students Fought for classes in spanish, smaller classes, chicano teachers, strikes Bilingual education act 3. More political power La Raza Uninda,mobilize voters & job training None, increase presences at polls

Healthier, more secured lives of their own choosing Declaration of Indian Purpose = self determination, create economic opportunities Indian Civil Rights Act Indian Education Act Indian self determination & Education assistance act 2. Restoration of Indian lands, burial grounds, fishing and timber rights AIM = militant action, seize Alcatraz, Bureau of Indian Affairs, & Wounded Knee Alaskan Native Land Claim Settlement Act Series of land or $$ return to tribes

11 Saving the Earth 1.Alerted Americans to the dangers of pesticides, encouraged people to lobby congress, helped bring about the Clean Air Act and banning of DDT, helped Americans realize that everyday behavior effects environment 2. Encouraged people to learn about environmental issues and to take action to improve environment 3. Established regulations for and enforcement of the nation’s environmental protection policies

Forced industries to meet tougher pollution standards, led to reduction in pollution levels 5.One of the most powerful displays of community action, brought awareness to dumping of hazardous material 6. Alerted people to the dangers of nuclear energy, persuaded the federal government to issue stricter safety standards and inspection procedures for nuclear power plants
