2  Listening: Purposefully paying attention to and making sense of what we hear

3  Hearing: the vibration of sound waves on the eardrums and the subsequent firing of electrochemical impulses to the brain

5  Appreciative Listening: listening for pleasure or enjoyment

6  Listening to provide emotional support.

7  Listening to understand and absorb the message of a speaker

8  Listening to evaluate the message for the purposes of accepting or rejecting the message

9  1. Not concentrating  2. Listening too hard  3. Jumping to conclusions and rejecting the message  4. Focusing on the personal appearance or delivery rather than the message

11  Get into pairs.  On a sheet of loose leaf, create a detailed scenario, using names and specifics, for each type of listening.  Example: Kelly is very upset about her puppy being run over by the ice cream truck. She calls Liam, who patiently listens to her story in order to make her feel better, even though he hated that dog.
