Hotspot development for Jokkmokk and Laponian Western Norrbotten Mid-term Presentation http://csd.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2004-team18/ 2004-Mar-23
2
Outline Project Goals Technical Solution Business Model Project Status Summary
3
Project Goals
4
Project Hotspot Laponia Creation of several wireless hotspots in the town of Jokkmokk located in Laponia, Northern Sweden Each hotspot is an independent module that can be installed in a location with or without wired internet connectivity Hotspot provides network services to users regardless of location
5
Impact on community Convenient way of connecting to the Internet Start phase of the Sámi network connectivity project Choice of Internet providers allows for connecting to Internet at the cheapest rate Stimulates competition among Internet providers
6
Concepts to be addressed Open Net Reproducible versatile network kit architecture
7
Open Net Freedom of choice of Internet service provider by the user Hotspots and ISPs connected to a neutral access network Set of fair rules allowing Internet services providers and hotspot owners to provide competitive communication services
8
Reproducible Kit Hardware and software components which make up a ‘ plug and play ’ hotspot Reproducible wireless solution providing several network services to users
9
Services for town users Internet service provider selection mechanism Web content: Hotspot specific information Tourist information Email relay VoIP
10
Services for remote users Email relay Pre-loaded and updateable web content Educational material : Study material Tests and exercises E-articles and e-journals
11
Technical Solution VLAN per ISPs with multiple SSIDs
12
Existing infrastructure Jokkmokk Municipality network Sàmi Educational Center network Ajtte Sàmi Museum network
13
Main technical concepts Open Net Allows users to choose which ISP to use to access Internet Reproducible Kit Permits stakeholders owners to setup hotspots from a readymade ‘ package ’
14
Solution:VLAN per ISPs with Multiple SSIDs
15
Open Net Solution Creation of logically separate networks (VLANs) per ISP 01 02 03
16
Open Net Solution (cont’) AP supports Multiple SSIDs to setup ISP selection mechanism Choose SSID = 01 SSID_ISP1=VLAN_ID 01 SSID_ISP2=VLAN_ID 02 VLAN Switch ISP1 VLAN_ID 02 ISP2 VLAN_ID 01 01 Choose SSID = 02 02
17
Web Server Captive Portal Web Captive Portal VoIP Service Email Relay Reproducible Kit Solution Provide local services: Web captive portal, Email relay, VoIP Kit Easy to setup and reproducible
18
Pros and Cons Pros Meet all the requirements Support Open Net and Kit Cons Manually change SSIDs Cost
19
Business model Actors, dependences and agreements
20
Groups involved SNC project Hotspot owners Operators of municipality network Internet service providers Wireless Internet customers
21
Wireless Internet customers (ISP) ISPs Wireless Internet customers (hotspots) Hotspot owners Municipality network operator SNC
22
Project status Current position and the road ahead
23
Current position Detailed definition of a proposed system completed Initial tests made Negotiations with ISPs under way
24
The road ahead Reach agreement with principal on final system layout Reach agreements with ISPs and other stakeholders Test system in Kista Document system Install system in Jokkmokk Educate local managers
25
Summary Goals Open net solution and reproducible network kit design What we have accomplished: Project plan, design report, technical solution, etc What we are going to realize: Test, implementation, training
