Diversity and Classification Review

Classification of Living Things Organisms are classified according to the similarity and differences between them. Taxa: levels of organization of organisms. The seven taxa are: KINGDOM PHYLUM CLASS ORDER FAMILY GENUS SPECIES (ORGANISMS WITH THE SAME TAXA LOWER IN THE LIST ARE MORE CLOSELY RELATED).

SIX KINGDOMS OF LIVING THINGS ANIMALIA PLANTAE FUNGI PROTISTA BACTERIA ARCHAEA (ARCHAEBACTERIA)

Characteristics of Living Things Seven characteristics of living things: 1)Composed of Cells 2)Levels of organization 3)Use of energy for growth and maintanance 4)Respond to their environment 5)Living things grow 6)Reproduce 7)Adapt to their environment

The Cell Theory 1)The ______ is the basic STRUCTURAL unit of living things. Every living ____________ is composed of one or more ___________. 2)The ______ is the basic FUNCTIONAL unit of living things. Life functions of an organism are carried out at the ______________ level. 3)All cells are derived from _____________ cells. 4)In a multicellular organisms, the activity of the entire organism depends on the total activity of its independent ____________.

Biodiversity Degree of variation of life forms within an ecosystem, biome, or the whole planet.

Prokaryotes/Eukaryotes Prokaryotes: – Cells lacking in a true nucleus and most other organelles. – Bacteria & Arhaea Eukaryotes: – Larger and have more complex internal structure – Contain nuclei and other types of membrane- bound organelles

How to Classify Organisms Dichotomous Key: devise used to identify an unknown organism. – Continually splits larger groups into smaller groups based on physiological characteristics down to the species level. Binomial Nomenclature: using two word names (genus species) to identify an organism.
