5 The Civil War Ends Essential Question: How did the war finally come to an end?  Years of the war 1861 – 1865  1 st shots – Ft Sumter  North vs South over states’ rights  #1 states rights issue was SLAVERY  After 1863, the South was always on the defensive  1864 – Lincoln was reelected, North became even more aggressive  1864 – 1865 Confederate troops retreated throughout the South

7 End of the Civil War April 9, 1865- Confederates surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse Terms of the surrender –Confederates had to surrender their weapons. –Grant fed all of Lee’s troops before sending them home –Lee encouraged his men to “go be good citizens” Do you agree with the terms of the surrender? Why or why not?
