Michelle Fridey Erica Hall Daniel Stratford

What are pedometers ? A device that tracks the amount of steps taken by it’s user Reset the pedometer prior to initial use Attach the pedometer to the users belt or waist band Wear the pedometer throughout the day’s activities Set fitness goal to reach a certain amount of steps per class Calculate the distance traveled or steps taken for activities How do we use them?

Positives Easy to use Non-threatening (emphasis on participation rather than skill, winning/losing and fitness) Private/self-monitoring By setting individual goals research indicates it motivates students to participate in increased physical activity Emphasizes being active every day is important Does not require practice Affordable Comfortable to wear

Limitations Measure the amount of physical activity rather than intensity, skill or fitness Accuracy of the pedometer (“You shake it, we take it!”) Due to their size and weight they are susceptible to damage and misplacement Battery replacement or recharging

Benefits to the student Track progress on day to day basis Goals can be individualized for every student Leaves no one behind Measures levels of MVPA within units of curriculum Used cohesively with aspects of health in order to realize cardiovascular benefits Weight management Blood pressure Health maintenance Benefits to the teacher

Healthy Steps Program School-wide walking program Week long program to promote fitness and learn about the benefits of cardiovascular fitness

Physical Education Teacher Students will engage in activity to increase level of cardiovascular fitness during class Students wear pedometers assigned at the beginning of class, check their total number of steps and record it at the end of class Students will learn about benefits of cardiovascular fitness and how the heart works

Classroom Teacher One pedometer will be distributed to each teacher Teacher records number of steps taken by class per day Teacher keeps track of steps taken-(ie- classroom to the gymnasium) and has one student wear the pedometer during class During recess, students can accumulate more steps by walking the designated “walking route” around the school with their teacher. Teachers will hand in the reports at the end of the day in a box in the main office Top classes will be announced in the mornings

Student at Home Students can keep track of steps at home with their parents and record their results if their parents or guardian signs off on it Number of steps can be multiplied by number of people walking with the student Example: A walk with mom and dad will equate to triple the amount of steps! Students should NOT go for a walk by themselves

Daily/Weekly Tasks After each day teachers will fill out their step total from the pedometer given and write the results down on the sheet given at the beginning of the week PE teachers will add up the scores for the week, record the results on the poster outside of the gymnasium and announce the leaders in the announcements the following morning after the pledge After the week- Students and teachers hand in their step totals for the week Top 3 Classrooms and students get pizza with the principal, certificates and picture in the town newspaper (Appropriate handouts and informational letters will be distributed to parents and students. Teachers will learn about this program in our next faculty meeting.)
