Clothing and Dance of India
2
CLOTHING * Popular styles of dress include draped garments such as sari for women and dhoti or lungi or panche (in Kannada) for men. The dhoti also known as pancha, mardani or vesthi is a traditional men's garment worn in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. It is a rectangular piece of unstitched cloth, usually around 4.5 meters (15 ft.) long, wrapped around the waist and the legs and knotted at the waist, resembling a long skirt. The sari is worn with an underskirt and tight fitted top called a choli. The undergarments were not oft worn in antiquity - but became the fashion requirement under the influence of Victorian English ideas in the 19th century. Tribal and village women today are still wearing their sarees the natural and comfortable way.
