WWII – A new kind of war ► Did not fight in trenches like WWI ► Moved quickly using tanks, ships, an airplanes ► Bombs dropped from air raids destroyed a lot and killed many ► War was fought over a larger area of land ► WWII had two major fronts – battle lines 1. Africa and Europe 2. Pacific Ocean

War in Africa and Europe ► Allies wanted control of the Mediterranean Sea and to invade Italy ► Allies won North Africa in may 1943 ► 1944 Allies captured Rome ► June 6, 1944 largest water-to-land invasion in history (Allied forces) D-day – the Allies invaded Normandy Allies broke through German lines

The Holocaust ► Hitler with his Nazis blamed the jews for Germany’s economic problems ► He was using concentration camps ► Hitler made life VERY difficult for Jews ► Hitlers “final solution to the Jewish question” was a campaign of mass murder against all European Jews and other “undesirables” The Holocaust ► ► Anne Frank wrote a diary about her days during this time.

War in Africa and Europe ► Battle of the Bulge – Germans counterattacked the Allies ► General George Patton (American General) turned them back ► 1945 Allied troops made it to Berlin, Germany’s capital ► Hitler killed himself ► May 8, 1945 V-E Day (Victory over Europe) - German surrendered to Allies

8. War In the Pacific ► General Douglas MacArthur led Americans in May 1942 to defeat the Japanese fleet in the Battle of the Coral Sea ► Battle of Midway four enemy aircraft carriers sunk – Japan’s navy never recovered ► These battles turned the war in the Pacific in favor of the Allies.

War In the Pacific Island-hopping – a plan to take back only the most important islands on the way to Japan ►B►B►B►Battles on the islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa led by General MacArthur ►H►H►H►Harry S. Truman is President ►A►A►A►August 6, 1945 Enola Gay dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima ►A►A►A►August 9th bomb dropped on Nagasaki

10. World War II Ends ► August 15, 1945 Japan surrendered after the US dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ► V-J Day Victory over Japan ► About 300,000 American soldiers died in WWII ► Close to 15 million soldiers from other countries died

11. Changes In Technology ► Changes in technology changed the way WWII was fought ► Planes were used in many different ways ► Dropped bombs, “drones” flew without pilots, transported soldiers, planes launched at sea and could attack places that could not be reached from land

12. Changes In Technology ►O►O►O►Other military inventions: antiaircraft guns, radar, two-way radios ►B►B►B►Battlefield medicines improved: penicillin and sulfa helped fight infections, DDT used to kill mosquitoes and other insects that carried deadly diseases

13. A Changed World ► United Nations was formed (UN) ► The purpose of the UN is to keep world peace and promote cooperation among nations ► America now strongest nation in the world ► Helped other nations rebuild ► Relationships between the Soviet Union and the US became bitter

14. A Changed World ► Soviet Union set up a communist government Communism – is a system in which all property is owned by the government ► US helped countries fight the spread of communism by giving them military and economic help ► US and its allies became known as the free world

15. The Cold War ► Free world vs. communist nations ► The hostility became known as the Cold War Cold War – a war fought with propaganda and money rather than with soldiers and weapons ► This Cold War shaped world events for most of the second have of the 1900s.
