She compiled data on average ages when people complete normal life experiences- marriage have their first child have teenagers have no more children retirement

8 Stage 1 Beginning Family
Married couple establish their home but do not yet have any children

9 Beginning Family- Developmental Tasks
Establishing a home and learning to get along with each other The couple has time to pursue their own interests and both husband and wife may have jobs outside of the home.

10 Stage 2 Expanding Family From the birth of the first child until the
child starts school

11 Expanding Family- Developmental Tasks
Couple becomes parents and assumes the role of care giver for the child Increased demands will be made on their time, energy, finances and freedom Changes in family structure will affect the couple’s home, work, and social life

12 Stage 3 Developing Stage The oldest child starts school

13 Developing Stage- Developmental Tasks
The family’s schedule is adjusted due to new school activities Activities may take up more time and money for the family Parents are also affected as teens begin to spend more time with their friends

14 Stage 4 Launching Stage The oldest child leaves home

15 Launching Stage- Developmental Tasks
The parents may now find additional time and freedom after the last child has left the home The couple may feel a void in their lives after the last child has left the house, and must find new interests to fill their leisure time

16 Stage 5 Aging Stage After retirement

17 Aging Family- Developmental Tasks
The couples activities will depend on their health As the couple ages, they may need additional help from their family Elderly members may require special services as they age

18 Overlapping Stages If more children at any time come into the family, the cycle repeats itself. A couple in retirement may take care of a grandchild, thus making them a Developing Family again A family can be in many overlapping stages
