2 Garrison’s Authored Work In 1818, Garrison worked for the Newburyport Herald in Massachusetts as a writer and editor. He worked as co-editor of an antislavery paper started by in Maryland called The Genius of Universal Emancipation by 1830. He wrote and published The Liberator, his own anti- slavery newspaper, in 1831.

3 Garrison Quote “I will be as harsh as truth, and as uncompromising as justice….I do not wish to think, or speak, or write, with moderation.... I am in earnest -- I will not equivocate -- I will not excuse -- I will not retreat a single inch -- AND I WILL BE HEARD!”

4 Historical Significance Garrison was a radical abolitionist. He avidly spoke out against slavery and for the rights of blacks in America. He fired one of the first shots of the Civil War with the words of his anti-slavery newspaper. He was stubbornly principled in his abolitionist beliefs. He demanded the North’s secession from the “wicked” South as a result of these beliefs.
