SW-PBIS Philipsburg-Osceola Area Middle School “The Role of the Family”

What is SW-PBIS? A school-wide system for managing student behavior to support academic achievement and create a positive culture within our school community It consists of a two-fold framework with positive responses to appropriate student behavior along with a disciplinary response for misbehavior Rewards for appropriate behavior Consequences for inappropriate behavior

Why SW-PBIS? Schools that establish SWPBIS with fidelity have teaching and learning environments that are Less reactive, dangerous, and exclusionary More engaging, responsive, preventive, and productive SWPBIS helps teachers Address classroom management and disciplinary issues Improve supports for students whose behaviors require more specialized assistance Most importantly, SWPBIS maximizes academic engagement and achievement for all students.

How do Students know what is Appropriate Behavior? The 4 school rules are displayed prominently around the building All Staff and Students are clearly instructed in the expectations at the beginning of the year and when student behavior falls short of expectations

What do the Rewards look like? Weekly Drawings for small prizes from flex/homeroom classes Mighty Mounties Club – prizes given when the board is filled Student Reward Day – fun activities once a marking period

What about inappropriate behavior? Students are re-taught the appropriate behaviors individually or in small groups Parents are contacted to discuss the issue and ideas for improvement Loss of privileges Detentions or In-School Suspension Tiered response

How do Parents fit in? Teens don’t think like us… – Teens are more concerned with the present than the future – Teens don’t process risk and reward calculations the same way adults do – The peer group takes on added influence in the decision-making process BUT, you still have a VERY important role to play!

Here’s How You Can Help Be a good role model. You are still the most important influence in your child’s life Give respect to get respect. Listen and acknowledge your child’s feelings and point of view Keep the lines of communication open at all times Reinforce the Mountie Pride behavior expectations at home

Contact Information Please feel free to contact the school with any questions, concerns or suggestions you may have The PBIS team meets once a month during the school day and will review all communication that is brought to our attention Check out the website for additional information http://www.pbis.org Thank you for participating today and for all you do for your families!
