1 NHS Health Checks Helping you prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease

2  Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes or chronic kidney disease.  Even if you’re feeling well, its worth having your NHS Health Check to lower your chances of developing these problems in the future.  The good news is that these conditions can be prevented, even if you have a history of them in your family.  Have your FREE NHS Health Check and you will be better prepared for the future and be able to take steps to maintain or improve your health.

3 Who is eligible for a NHS Health Check? An NHS Health Check is available to everyone aged between 40-74 years of age who has not already been diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, stroke or chronic kidney disease

4 Why do I need an NHS Health Check? Your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and kidney disease increases with age, however there are also other things that will put you at an even greater risk:  Being overweight  Lack of exercise  Smoking  High cholesterol  High blood pressure

5 What happens at the check? The check is to assess your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and stroke.  The check will take about 20-30 minutes  You will be asked simple questions about your family history and any medication you are currently taking  Record your height, weight, age, sex, and ethnicity  Record you blood pressure  Take a blood sample to check your cholesterol level

6 What happens after the check? Your results will be discussed and you will be given personal advice on how to lower your risk and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Some further tests may be needed dependent on the results. Treatment or medication may be prescribed to help you maintain your health.
