Do Now (5 minutes): 1. What is the basic unit of matter? 2. What is the difference between diet coke vs coke? 3. If object A has 24g and 12ml, which of these tells you how much space it takes up? _________ 4. Are grams a measure of mass or volume? 5. Are milliliters a measure of mass or volume?

Classwork ( ) Guided Notes Group Work Independent Practice

What properties does matter consist of? 1.Physical Properties 2.Chemical Properties Property= trait, characteristic

What is a physical property? Physical Properties are things that can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter. Things that can be observed using our senses Things that can be measured with scientific instruments Examples: color, shape, texture

Physical Properties (1 min) Write down 3 physical properties of the ball.

What is a chemical property? Chemical Properties are things that identify how a specific type of matter will react or change when combined with another type of matter. Things that can be observed only when substances interact with each other. Things that cannot be determined just by viewing or touching the substance by itself. Examples: Flammability (will it burn?), reactivity (will it react with something else?)

Quick Check Quick Checks contribute to your participation grade! Do not take them lightly. You can not talk to your neighbor during quick checks.

Quick Check Which of the following is true? 1.Physical properties involve a reaction to measure or determine. 2.Chemical properties cannot be determined just by viewing or touching the substance by itself. 3.Reactivity is a physical property. 4.Color is a chemical property.

Quick Check! Which statement describes a chemical property? A.Its crystals are a metallic gray. B.It dissolves in alcohol. C.It forms a violet-colored gas. D.It reacts with hydrogen to form a gas.

Quick Check! Is color a physical or chemical property? 1. physical property 2. chemical property

Is flammability a physical or chemical property? 1. Physical Property 2. Chemical Property

Quick Check! Is texture a physical or chemical property? 1.Physical 2.Chemical

Quick Check! Is Boiling Point a physical or chemical property? 1.Physical property 2.Chemical Property

Soda Can Demo Will diet coke sink or float in water? Will regular coke sink or float in water? Density of Coke

What is density? Density is the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of a substance. The units of density we’ll be using= g/cm 3 or g/mL The equation for density: D= mass volume M DV X ÷

What is density? Density of other objects is often related to water. Does an object float in water? Does it sink in water? The density of water = 1 g/cm 3 or 1 g/mL. So if an object floats in water, the density is ____________ than ___________. If an object sinks in water, the density of the object is __________ than ___________.

Stats of Diet and Reg Coke! CokeDiet Coke Volume in mL355 mL Mass of Sugar39g0g Nutra Sweet0 g0.1 g Total Weight355 + 39 = 394g355 + 0.1 = 355.1g Density394g/355mL = 1.11 g/mL 355.1g/ 355 mL = 1.00 g/ mL Float or Sink in water?

Steps for solving density problems Step 1: Determine the variables (Density, mass and volume) Step 2: Plug givens into equation(triangle) Step 3: Solve equation

Example 1 A block's mass is 24 grams and its volume is 12 cm 3. What is the density of the block? Step 1: D= M= V= Step 2: Step 3:

Example 2 A ball's volume is 2.5 mL and the mass is 9.1 grams. What is the density of the ball? Step 1: D= M= V= Step 2: Step 3:

Lets Practice Together!

Worksheet Spend the next ____________ minutes working on your worksheet. During this time, students should be: Working independently Silently Raise hand to ask questions

Exit Slip GRADED When finished, flip over your exit slip and wait silently in your seat for your peers to finish. When asked, we will all pass our papers to the front of the classroom.
