Lesson Objective All How ICT can be used in design and presentation & consider programs that can be used by designers Most Appreciate the link between designing and making when using computers Some Reflect on existing knowledge and link it to the use of ICT
2
In your book or on a sheet of paper note down everything you can think of that a computer does! Spreadsheets Word processing Internet/surfing E-MAIL Video editing Graphs & Charts Corel Draw/Paint Photo editing Publisher
3
Write down all the things you have to do in Textiles but also if you were actually a designer! Cutting out/Lay planning Choosing fabric Knitting Weaving Sampling Sewing Designing Embroidery Working with a factory Making a patter
4
How could you use the computer to help you to these tasks? Sampling Super idea, can’t quite explain it to the teacher? Use a software for 3-D modelling to show what you meant. 3-D Modelling
5
If you were to cut out thousands of items it couldn’t be done by hand! Cutting out Lay planning
6
Sewing http://youtu.be/4ex_qTx5HIs http://youtu.be/4ex_qTx5HIs show its done! Welt Pockets Button Holes http://youtu.be/Bwsn7yn5V_s
7
Designing/ Colour ways Colouring in by hand, drawing by hand, making a pattern by hand all possible but really time consuming. With a good computer program you don’t need to draw at all!
8
Figure Construction
16
And ‘Voila’ perfect designs just computer skills necessary!
17
Again doing by hand isn’t economical, industrial machines do the work for you. You can scan in a drawing or develop it on the computer and it will embroider the design. Embroidery
18
Choosing Fabric Being in the shop is fab you can touch and feel the quality but then you have trust the fabric will look good. What if it just doesn’t? Modelling the fabric on a computer program is a lot quicker, provided the manufacturer has uploaded their newest fabric design.
19
Making a Pattern I love making my own patterns, its tactile and very creative. Most designers do work without the computer for that part. However, ‘NEXT’ for example hasn’t got the luxury of time. Once the patterns are drafted and perfect they are tweaked on the computer. NEXT has its very own software!
20
Working with a Factory If you are designing products and they are made in China you need to talk to the factory all the time. E-mail used to be THE THING but now that’s moved on to virtual sites which are uploaded like the schools VLE and can be accessed from anywhere on the globe. So quick, easy but not cheap.

Knitting Now, that really has moved on, knitwear is so popular that new machines are invented constantly, just look at that design! And all is run through a computer software system. AMAZING STUFF!

Now you are ready to answer some exam questions! 1.How can manufacturer use computers to put colour and pattern on to fabric? 2. Explain how computers can help you to design new products. 3.Describe how ICT helps designers to choose fabrics and components. 4.Give two advantages of using computerized machines for pattern laying and cutting fabric. 5. How can manufacturer use computers to cut out fabric?
