1 Job Skills Tutorial: Foundation Skills What are Foundation Skills? Foundation Skills are those required of all workers in the high-performance workplace of the 21st century. They were developed by the Secretary of Labor's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS). SCANS states that half of the people entering the workplace lack the knowledge and foundation required to find and hold a good job.

2 Job Skills Tutorial: Goal The following tutorial is designed to introduce you to these essential workplace foundation skills. At the end of this Tutorial you will be able to identify the different types of skills needed in today’s work environment.

3 Job Skills Tutorial: Description This tutorial is composed of three modules: MODULE l: Types Of Foundation Skills A short and simple explanation of the different types of skills needed in today’s workforce.

8 Job Skills Tutorial: Module 1 1.BASIC SKILLS a. Reading Skills locating, understanding, and interpreting written information in documents such as correspondence, manuals, graphs, and schedules.

9 Job Skills Tutorial: Module 1 1.BASIC SKILLS b. Writing Skills For example: writing letters, directions, manuals, reports, graphs, and flow charts. Learners communicate thoughts, ideas, information, and messages in writing.

10 Job Skills Tutorial: Module 1 1.BASIC SKILLS c. Arithmetic/ Mathematics Skills Learners perform basic computations and approach practical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical techniques.

13 Job Skills Tutorial: Module 1 It is generating new ideas Combining ideas or information in new ways. 2.Thinking Skills a.Creative Skills Makes connections between seemingly unrelated ideas and reshapes goals in ways that reveal new possibilities.
