Stems – The Big Ideas Stems help move water and nutrients through a plant. Stems have unique structures that allow them to do their job. Stems allow plants to receive sunlight by supporting a plant’s leaves.

Stems – Prior Knowledge Students will have knowledge of plants prior to this study. It will be helpful for students to use the Fun-damental, Getting to Know Plants. It will also help if they have:Getting to Know Plants Seen different kinds of plants and flowers. Planted a seed. Learned that plants have parts that serve different purposes.

Stems – Common Misconceptions You do not have to worry about being around a dead poison ivy plant. Reality: The urushiol oil of the poison ivy plant stays active, even on dead plants, for five years.

Stems – Instructional Ideas Read the passage, What’s in a Stem?What’s in a Stem? –Give each group of three students a white carnation, a vase with water, and blue food coloring. –Ask students to add at least 5 drops of food coloring to the water in the vase until water is dark. –Ask students to place the carnation in the water. –After 2 days observe the flower. –Discuss what has happened and why.

Stems – Instructional Ideas Guide students through the first screen of the Exploration, Stems.Stems –Allow students to continue at their own pace through the rest of the Exploration. Read the passage, Xylem and Phloem.Xylem and Phloem –Do an internet search race. –Ask students to race to find and list as many vascular plants as possible in 2 minutes. –Compare lists and discuss how these plants receive their food using xylem and phloem.
