Oral Presentation Tips (Ch. 7 of Making Sense) Oral component is worth 25% of second assignment It’s a collective team grade

1. Preparation watch purpose (e.g., why are you giving pres.) pay attention to audience but be sensible (e.g., don’t use too many personal pronouns of reference; maintain contact with audience) be focused (e.g., rather than giving audience individual handouts, have them focus on presentation on screen; via overhead machine; computer) be clear (e.g., explain unknown terms)

2. Planning don’t only write/read presentation (e.g., make notes) produce visuals that match presentation sections (if needed) focus on time limits (15 mins. max.) use index cards keyed to visuals (e.g., list details of presentation) don’t be redundant (e.g., if your presentation is electronic and has slides, avoid index cards)

3. Visuals take advantage of transparencies, slides, charts, PPT presentations, etc., if necessary make sure that visuals don’t take away from content (e.g., PPTs saturated with video and sound are often unnecessary) keep content readable, clear, presentable (e.g., use appropriate fonts; clean backgrounds) be organized (e.g., have title slide; keep transparencies in order)

4. Presentation rehearse few times (e.g., time your delivery) use clear and calm voice (e.g., connect with audience) pace visual aids (e.g., elaborate on visuals; don’t block screen by standing in front; give enough time for each visual) end confidently (i.e., apologies and uncertainties weaken presentations) be ready for questions (e.g., audience may be curious)
