3 Intel Confidential 3 L3 Approach  L3 mechanism using IWF (Inter-Working Function) –UE communicates with IWF via X200/R9 interface (IP Tunnel) –The UE communicates with the 3GPP SFF over a mobile WiMAX IP access in order to prepare handover to a 3GPP access. –The UE communicates with the WiMAX SFF over a 3GPP access (GERAN/UTRAN/EUTRAN) in order to prepare handover to a mobile WiMAX access.  The IWF is composed of two independent logical elements – WiMAX SFF, 3GPP SFF –For Handover from 3GPP to WiMAX: WiMAX SFF emulates an BS. The WiMAX SFF interfaces with ASN using WiMAX R6 interface. –For Handover from WiMAX to 3GPP SFF emulates a RNC/eNB (RRC functionality) – –3GPP SFF exposes a X201 interface to target SGSN (GERAN/UTRAN HO) or X202 interface to target MME (E-UTRAN HO). – –X201 is like RNC - SGSN interface (Iu), X202 is like eNB – MME interface (S1-MME) 3GPP SFF WiMAX SFF X200 R9 X202 X201 R6 IWF To UE To ASN-GW To SGSN/MME

7 Intel Confidential 7  SFF Discovery via DNS query –MS acquires the domain name via DHCP and generates the FQDN. The MS sends a DNS query to the DNS Server including the FQDN. The DNS server responds with a DNS answer including the SFF’s IP address.  FQDN is generated as below –WiMAX-BSID.WiMAX.SFF. SFF Discovery
